Joseph Charles Guziewicz, Sr.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Charles Guziewicz, Sr, 88 of Scranton. Joe passed peacefully on Sunday at Scranton Healthcare Center.
Born November 22, 1937 in Scranton, Joe was the son of the late Charles and Mary Zakrzewski Guziewicz. Joe was lifelong resident of South Side and a 1955 graduate of South Catholic High School. Upon graduation, he entered the Air Force where he served for four years as an aircraft mechanic in Texas, South Carolina, and Turkey, among other bases. After earning an honorable discharge from service, he returned to Scranton where he met the love of his life, Marita, on a blind date on New Year's Eve 1962. They were married May 30, 1964, and had 5 children. Joe was employed at McKinney MFG for 40 years before retirement in July 2004. In his free time, he was a baseball coach at Connell Park, where he also helped as a groundskeeper.
Joe was a fan of the SWB Red Barons/Railriders and was an original season ticket holder, which he held for over 25 years. From an early age, Joe held a passion for music. He fostered his passion by performing as a Tenor with the Marywood Campus Choir for 32 years and the Northeast Choral Society for 30 years. His greatest joy was singing with his granddaughters at both Marywood and the Choral Society. He loved doing crossword puzzles, playing games on his computer, and enjoyed the challenge of playing along nightly watching Jeopardy.
In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by his children, Joseph (Angela), Terri, Stephanie, and Greg (Amy). As well as eleven grandchildren, brother, Albert (Kate), several nieces, nephews, and cousins and his beloved "furry fury", Daisy. He was preceded in death by son John, sister Barbara, and brother Gene.
The funeral will be held Saturday, January 3, 2026 , at 8:30 from the August J Haas Funeral Home, 202 Pittston Ave., with a mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am at the Cathedral of St. Peter to be celebrated by Rev Scott Sterowski. Internment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends and family may call Friday evening from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. All are asked to go directly to church Saturday morning.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Joseph's Center or St Jude's Children's Hospital. The family wishes to thank the staff at Scranton Health Care Center for their unwavering support in Joe's care.

Nelson Blackwell

Nelson Blackwell, 90 of Scranton, went home to the Lord on December 21, 2025.
Nelson was born in Morris, PA to Clifford and Marvella Blackwell. In his youth, he loved the joys of hunting and fishing and all that nature provided. As a young man, he joined the United States Air Force and proudly served his country for 10 years as a Staff Sergeant. This was one of his proudest achievements and he often spoke fondly of his time in the military. The skills he learned there allowed to him to work on electronics throughout his career.
Nelson was known for his wit and endless silly sayings or "Nelson-isms". He was a kind and loving father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Nelson is survived by his loving daughter Diana Hoffman of Scranton, granddaughter Meghan Minora and husband John of Old Forge, daughter-in-law Jodi Blackwell of Lititz, great-grandchildren Edmund, Julia, and Kaitlyn, his sister Patricia Allen of Wellsboro, his loving girlfriend of many years Bettyann Armstrong of Harrisburg, many nieces and nephews, and his best friend and cousin Norman Blackwell.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, his son Mark Blackwell, brother Clifford Blackwell Jr., sister Ellen Lawrence, and his great-grandson Joel Minora. The family would like to acknowledge Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the love and care they showed Nelson in his final months.
Services will be held on Sunday, December 28th at 2PM in the August J. Haas Funeral Home, 202 Pittston Ave. Scranton. Visitors are welcome from 12-2. Interment private in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

Lucretia "Lu" Pusateri

Lucretia "Lu" Pusateri, 96, a resident of Scranton, died Wednesday evening in Linwood Nursing and Rehab Center. She was the widow of Anthony P. Pusateri, Sr. who died in 2015 and the couple were married for 69 years. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Theresa Ceccacci Cesarini.
Lu was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Class of 1946. She was a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish and until its closure, she was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church. She was employed as a seamstress for Matthew's Paint Store. She was a member of the After 50 Club and was involved with Scranton Tech's reunions. Lu loved to bake pies and cookies especially during holidays, she was an excellent cook. Lu was a loving wife, mom, grandmom who will be deeply missed.
Surviving are her son Anthony P. Pusateri, Jr. and wife Sharon, Ohio, her daughter Theresa Carpenetti and husband Edward, Scranton, grandchildren; Gina Bennington and husband Barry, Edward Carpenetti and wife Ann, Paul Carpenetti and husband Bryan Sorrentino, and Lori Pusateri, great grandchildren; Natalie and Olivia Bennington, Sophia, Ethan and Maddy Carpenetti, nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her brother Joseph V. Cesarini.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 AM by Rev. Jonathan Kuhar, Pastor, in Sacred Hearts Of Jesus and Mary Church, St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 1217 Prospect Ave. Entombment Italian-American Cemetery, Minooka Section. Perfecto Mendez

Perfecto Mendez unexpectedly fell ill and shortly after, he was called home to God. At his time of passing, he was surrounded by his loving family and support from his church. He was born in Naguabo, Puerto Rico on April 18, 1956, to Julia Vasquez and Juan de la Cruz. He is proceeded by grandmother, Alejandria Valentina, and brothers, Herman and Jose Luis Mendez. He survived by his wife, Mercedes Mendez, their children, Yesenia Reyes and Mario Gomez, and their grandchildren, Mario Zbel, Kendall and Havana Gomez, alongside four brothers and nine nieces and nephews.

Girard J. (Jerry) Albrecht

Girard J. (Jerry) Albrecht, 90, a resident of the East Mountain section, died Sunday at home. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Patricia Sabitus, in 2013. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Edward and Dolores Seasegger Albrecht. He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. Jerry served in the US Navy from 1955 to 1958 as a Petty Officer 3rd Class at the Willow Grove Naval Station. He then was employed by Jaunty Fabrics as a loom fixer and retired in 1998 as a department manager of the weave shed. After his retirement, he was employed as the maintenance man for Holy Name of Jesus Church for two years. Jerry was very active in Holy Name of Jesus Church, serving as a Eucharistic Minister for over 10 Years, and was a major participant in the annual Roast Beef and Spaghetti Dinners. Since 1970, Jerry was a member of St. Mary's Parish Club.
Surviving are his daughter Joanne Keppley and husband Craig, Lebanon, grandchildren; Grace Keppley, Asheville, NC, Julianna Keppley, Lebanon, Alexander Albrecht, Philadelphia, and Kristen Thames, Lauren Kindle and Ryan Kacafirek, all of Port Huron, MI. And eight great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his son Gary Albrecht and his daughter Karlene A. Albrecht and three brothers; Donald, Joseph and Edward Albrecht.
The funeral will be Saturday at 8:30 AM from the August J. Haas Funeral Home, Inc., 202 Pittston Ave., with Mass of Christian Burial at 9AM in Immaculate Conception Church, 801 Taylor Ave., to be celebrated by Msgr. Dale Rupert. Diane L. McTague, 60, of Roaring Brook Twp., died Sunday evening in Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, after an illness. Born in Scranton, she is the daughter of Joan Miller McTague and the late Robert E. McTague. She was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and was a member of St. Eulalia's Parish. In the 1980s, Diane was a well known singer in the local bands Straight Arch and Deja Vu. She performed in many venues including Caesar's in Atlantic City and other resorts. Also surviving is her brother Eugene McTague and nieces and nephews. The funeral will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Mary Therese Pamelia Donahue,of Scranton, passed away on November 28, 2025.
Born the daughter of the late Benjamin and Rosalie Musso Pamelia, Mary Therese was a loving sister to Anthony Pamelia (Dr. Carol Pamelia) and Dorothy Scanlin. She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Timothy Scanlin. Mary Therese was the former spouse of Thomas Donahue, the father of her children.
A devoted mother, Mary Therese, leaves behind her children: Marie Donahue (Paul Bullock), Dorothy Mariotti (Paul Mariotti), Christopher M. Donahue (Dawn Hinkley), Rosalie Matthews (David Matthews), and Rena Wilson (Ryan Wilson). She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Dr. Thomas J.Donahue (Margaret Donahue).
She was blessed with fourteen grandchildren: Cara Donahue Felkowski (Jeffrey Felkowski), Christopher B.Donahue (Carolena Donahue), Meghan Donahue, Benjamin Donahue; Christopher Mariotti (Chloe Mariotti), John Mariotti, Julia Mariotti Staudenmeier (Taillon Staudenmeier) and late grandson Peter A. Mariotti; Angelica Matthews, Daniel Matthews, Francesca Matthews; Eliza Wilson, Nina Wilson, and Gabriel Wilson. Her legacy continues through her seven great-grandchildren: Liam, Nolan, Samuel, and Michael Felkowski; Luke and Roseo Donahue; and Aurelia Mariotti.
Mary Therese dedicated over 35 years of service to the Scranton School District, where she shared her deep love of learning with countless students. Following her retirement, she continued her vocation as an educator, working alongside her daughter Dorothy at The Children's Cornerstone-Montessori Preschool & Kindergarten, offering her expertise as a reading specialist.
A woman of great faith, Mary Therese lived her life centered in prayer, trust, and devotion. She cherished the fellowship of her "sisters in Christ" - her prayer partners Marge McCormack, Christine Loyek, Annette Surgent, and Carol Fisher - as well as her beloved siblings, Anthony and Dorothy, who joined her faithfully each week in prayer and reflection.
She found the greatest joy in spending time with her family, sharing meals, celebrating milestones, and embarking on adventures that created lasting memories for all who loved her.
Mary Therese's family is deeply grateful for the exceptional care, kindness, and compassion extended by the staff and volunteers at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore.
Calling hours will take place at August J.Haas Funeral Home in Scranton from 5PM-7PM on Friday, December 5, 2025. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday morning, December 6, 2025 at 10:00AM St. Ann's Basilica, Scranton by Reverend James Paisley, Pastor. Patricia Ann Buntz, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2025, at the age of 80.
Born in Scranton, PA to the late Christine and Roy Kelly, Pat will be remembered for her genuine love of family and friends, her zest for life, and her passion for Penn State Football. She was dedicated to her family through thick and thin, always there with a warm embrace and a macaroni, tomato and cheese casserole. She enjoyed trips to the Big Apple, crafts/sewing and quilting, but more than anything, her greatest happiness was found when spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandson. Pat was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, where she found joy in teaching Sunday school. She was also an avid member of the Friends of Hays Eagles, forming close friendships with many of the members throughout the United States.
Pat is survived by her husband of 60 years, Ed; her daughters Kelly McDonough (Ed) and Cathy Romeo (Chris); her cherished grandchildren Donnie VanFleet (Say), Molly Romeo (Michael), Matthew Romeo (Noelle), and Lily Romeo (Adam); her remarkable great-grandson Greysin VanFleet; and her loving sister Lani Burke. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, two younger brothers, Robert and Tim Kelly (survived by wife, Sharon), and brother-in-law Bob Burke. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.

Gretchen E. Meyers, 77, a resident of South Scranton, died Monday in Embassy of Wyoming Valley. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Leslie, Sr. and Evelyn Stein Meyers. She was a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, was a Eucharistic Minister for Immaculate Conception Church, and was a graduate of South Scranton Central Catholic High School. She was a long time employee of the former Guild Studios.
Gretchen was a strong willed, independent, and very kind woman. She was well known for walking her many dogs. Her family includes her sister Marion Lampkin and her brother Leslie Meyers, Jr., and nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Michael J. Trapper, 47, a resident of Taylor, died unexpectedly Sunday at home. His wife of almost 20 years is the former Sara Pitta. Born in Scranton, he is the son of Michael A. Trapper, Taylor and the late JoAnne Fedorchak Trapper. He was a graduate of Bishop Hannon High School, Class of 1996, and he was a licensed plumber and co owner of Mike Trapper Plumbing and Heating. Following Mike's heart transplant in May of 2017, he spent 53 weeks hospitalized and fought many setbacks. He loved music and cars and spending time with his daughters.
Also surviving are his three daughters; Olivia, Homosassa, FL, Ann and Elaina, Scranton, his brother Joseph Trapper, Taylor, and cousins. He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Herbert and Kathryn Healey Trapper and his maternal grandparents Albert and Norma Fedorchak, and aunts and uncles.

Joan L. Stepanauckas, a resident of Scranton, died Friday in Scranton.
Beloved daughter of the late Jonas and Anne Belch Stepanauckas. Sister of the late Jonas Junior Stepanauckas. Survived by her cousins, Charles CJ Step, Randal R. Step, Gary G. Step and Claudia G. Step.
Joan worked for the department of defense through several tours, including Europe and Vietnam. Joan was an avid downhill skier, a bear and deer hunter, fly fisherman and world traveler. Joan raised, and showed prize winning Afghan hounds for many years of her life.

Catherine "Cathy" D'Annunzio, 81, a resident of Moosic, passed away unexpectedly Thursday at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital. Her lifelong companion is Joseph Fenwick. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Esther Brown D'Annunzio. She was a graduate of Moosic-Taylor High School and was self employed as a beautician. Cathy was a member of Divine Mercy Parish.
Also surviving is her sister Donna D'Annunzio, with whom she resided, and Joseph's children; Joseph Fenwick, Jr. and wife Dianna, Edward Fenwick and wife Cheryl, Elizabeth Fenwick von Storch and husband Timothy, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Cathy was also preceded in death by a sister Joan Emiliani and a brother Michael D'Annunzio and an infant brother and sister.

Frank Ingiaimo, Jr., 82, a resident of the East Mountain Section, died Tuesday, October 28, 2025, in Geisinger CMC surrounded by family. His wife of 58 years is Margie Szydlowski Ingiaimo. Born in Scranton, he was the son of Frank, Sr. and Grace Talutto Ingiaimo.
Frank was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and was a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish. Prior to retirement, he was employed at Clarks Summit State Hospital. He was a member of Pennsylvania National Guard 109th Infantry. Frank was a kind and loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed.
Also surviving are his three beloved children; Lori D'Annunzio and husband Patrick, Frank Ingiaimo and wife Bobbi Jo, and John Ingiaimo, grandchildren; Joshua D'Annunzio and wife Julie, Brenna, Noah and Hanna D'Annunzio, Chiara and Auria Ingiaimo, great grandchild Drew, all of whom he adored.
He was also preceded in death by a brother Salvatore, and infant siblings Joseph and Concetta Ingiaimo, and a nephew.

Mary Lou Notari, a resident of Scranton, died Monday evening in Geisinger CMC. She was the widow of the late Dr. Edward Notari, MD, who died in 1986. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary Otto Langan. She was a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish. She attended St. Mary of Mount Carmel School and graduated from Dunmore High School. Prior to her marriage, she was employed by PP&L and Prudential Insurance Co. Mary Lou was deeply involved in charitable organizations and groups that reflected her faith such as the Sacred Heart League of Marywood and the St. Raphael Society. Mary Lou gave back to the community by volunteering at many organizations including VNA Hospice for 20 years, St. Francis Kitchen, Little Sisters of The Poor and St. Mary's Villa. She was also a devotee of St. Ann's Basilica.
Surviving are her children; Nancy Krake (Raymond), her caretaker, Scranton, Edward Notari (Deborah), Germantown, MD, John Notari (Kathleen), Winter Park, FL., Joseph Notari(Megan), Wellesley, MA, grandchildren; Jacqueline, Edward, Allison, Julianna, Emma, and Katherine Rose. She was also preceded in death by her son Edward Notari, Jr., and her siblings; Helen Ewasko, George Langan, Jr., Russell Langan, Irene Langan, Rose Langan, Alice Lory and Agatha Calkins and her nephew John Ewasko.

John (Jack) Bravetti

John (Jack) Bravetti,83, of Roaring Brook Twp. died unexpectedly Sept. 26th at Geisinger, CMC. He was the son of the late Enrico( Harry) and Mary Kostzeski Bravetti of Scranton.
John, whom everyone knew as Jack, was a jack of all trades! He was a brilliant person who could fix everything and anything that was broken.
Jack truly enjoyed helping anyone in need.
He attended West Scranton High School where he went onto graduate from Johnson Technical Institute in 1962. Jack was a member of local Carpenters Union 261 where he worked as a carpenter and millwright. His biggest and proudest accomplishment was the family home that he built all by himself in 1970.
In Jack's spare time he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, repairing anything that was broken, attending auctions, and going to antique car shows. Jack attained his pilot's license in 1985 and loved soaring the beautiful PA skies in his Piper 360.
He was affectionately called Poppy by his grandchildren and truly enjoyed spending time with them. Poppy will be truly missed by everyone who knew him. John's wife, the former Patricia Coco, preceded him in death.
Also surviving is his beloved daughter, Michelle Poplawski, his granddaughter, Deanna Poplawski, and his two great grandchildren, who he adored, Gage and Cora Collins, all of Dickson City.
The funeral will be Friday, October 24th at 11 a.m. in St. Theresa of Calcutta Parish, Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church located at 1217 Prospect Ave. Scranton. The family will receive visitors 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
As per John's wishes, he wanted to be interred together with his beautiful bride. Interment for John and Patricia Bravetti will take place following the funeral ceremony at the Italian-American Cemeterey, Cemetery Ave. in Minooka.

Mary Jean Foley, 88, a resident of Scranton, died Tuesday in Geisinger CMC. She was the widow of Joseph Foley and the couple were married for 64 years. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Nellie Ciesielski Sevitski. She was a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish and was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. She was a retired employee of Equifax. Mary Jean enjoyed cruises and traveling with her husband and Florida in winter. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed.
Surviving are her sons; Joseph W. Foley and wife Mary Ann, Dickson City, and John J. Marilyn Jean Gallo Ahern
Marilyn Jean Gallo Ahern, 84, of Scranton, passed away last week surrounded by family. She was born on October 11, 1940, the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Griffiths) Gallo.
Marilyn grew up in Scranton and spent her childhood summers at Wilsonville Landing on Lake Wallenpaupack, where she could often be found swimming, hiking, and laughing with friends. A graduate of Scranton Technical School, it was there she met the love of her life and high school sweetheart, Larry Ahern. Together they shared 65 beautiful years traveling the country, raising their family, and cherishing every day they had together.
For more than twenty years, Marilyn worked as a receptionist at Sanderson Place Salon in Scranton, fondly known to her as "the shop." No matter who walked in, they always left as her friend. A woman of deep faith, Marilyn was a devout Catholic with a special love for Blessed Father Seelos and Padre Pio. She joyfully shared this faith with everyone she met.
Throughout her life, Marilyn expressed herself through many hobbies. She played piano beautifully, published nationally-recognized poetry, composed music, wrote a book, and was the life of every gathering. She loved the outdoors, and especially enjoyed swimming.
Those blessed to know Marilyn will remember her always by her warm laughter, kind soul, and unforgettable hugs that made the world feel softer and safer.
Marilyn is survived by her beloved husband, Larry Ahern; her son, Matthew Ahern; her daughter, Tracy Metka, and son-in-law, John Metka; and her loving grandchildren Kaitlin, Liam, and Brigid Ahern, and Cami Metka. One of the greatest joys of her life was being a grandmother. She adored her grandchildren beyond measure and filled their lives with endless love. She is also survived by her brother-in-laws Patrick Ahern and his wife Pam, Cathy and her husband Rich, Thomas, Maureen, sister-in-law Shirley and several wonderful nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Francis "Butch" Gallo, of Bridgeport, Conn.
To honor Marilyn's memory, be kind to creatures great and small, hug your friends a little tighter, make a stranger smile today, and stop to find beauty in the little things. Say a prayer for someone who needs it, as she so often did.
A Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, October 16, at Saint Peter's Cathedral, 315 Wyoming Avenue, Scranton. Family and friends may call from 8:30 to 9:30 AM at the church, followed by Mass at 9:30 AM.

Louise A. Shevlin, 81, a Scranton resident, died Saturday evening in Geisinger CMC. Her husband of 65 years is Michael Shevlin. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Rose Halsey Ruiz. She was a graduate of St. Michael's High School, Brooklyn. Louise was a tough, independent woman with a heart of gold. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her family and enjoyed going to the casinos.
Her daugther Venus Lanigan and son in law Jake Lanigan. Her daugther Tina Punger and son in law Don punger. Her son Robert Shevlin and daugther in law Trisha. Her son James Shevlin. Her son Antonio. Her son Michael Shevlin and her daughter in law Charlene.
Louise had 18 grandchildren including Devin, Chase, Elizabeth, Emily, Love, Trust, Robert jr. and Donald. Louise had 20 great grandchildren including Penelope Elliot and Leilani. Louise had a great great great grandchild.

Ruth McDermott, 93, truly lived a life of compassionate service. She lovingly cared for her parents, Harry Michael McDermott, Sr. and Lucille Curran and supported them, until they passed in their later years. In addition to her parents, Ruth was also preceded in death by her sister - Grace, her brother - Dr. Harry M. McDermott, Jr. and his wife Mary, and her brother Reverend, Father Thomas J. McDermott. After graduating from the Nursing Programs at Mercy Hospital and Wilkes College she dedicated her life to her vocation of serving others. Ruth started as a Registered Nurse in the Mental Health Unit, at the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh during the Vietnam War.
Ruth lived most of her life on River Street in South Scranton, her home parish being Nativity Catholic Church. Following the closure of Nativity Catholic, Ruth became a devoted parishioner of Sacred Heart Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir.
Ruth's musical talent also included playing the guitar and entertaining the family with sing alongs! We all looked forward to our singing together with Ruth and her guitar on the beach, at the New Jersey shore. She loved exploring the caves of Pennsylvania and wherever her travels took her. Ruth was enthralled with animals of all kinds and in particular, horses, cats, and dogs. She truly cherished her Pomeranian dog, named Fritz.
In the later years of her career, she devoted her time to the caring of the elderly and the infirmed Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Scranton. Ruth was honored to be able to comfort and care for them, while they lived out their retirement years at Our Lady of Peace Residence.
She resided at the Allied Services Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Scranton since April 2017 where the care she had provided to others was returned to her by the warm and compassionate staff on the Allied Skilled Nursing's Dementia Unit.
Ruth is survived by her nephews and nieces: Dr. Harry M. McDermott, III (Marie), Dr. Stephen P. McDermott, Mrs. Anne L. Peno (Frank), Mrs. Mary Beth Hallberg (Paul), Mrs. Nancy L. Sommer (Tim), Mr. Thomas J. McDermott. She is also survived by thirteen great nephews and nieces and five great, great nephews and nieces.
A funeral Mass and burial for Ruth will be held at a later date and time. Carol Polster, 77, a South Scranton resident passed away Thursday night in Geisinger CMC. She was the wife of Joseph Polster, Sr. and the couple were married for 56 years. Born and raised in the Minooka Section of Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine Lameo Samsell.
She was a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish and was a high school graduate. Carol enjoyed canning summer vegetables and watching western movies.
Also surviving are her daughter Maureen Polster (Robert) Scranton, and her son Joseph Polster Jr.(Michelle), Goose Creek, SC, a granddaughter Adrianna, nieces and nephews. She was one of six siblings. Since Carol suffered for 40 years with Multiple Sclerosis, memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in lieu of flowers.

Kathleen "Kathy" L. Reed, formerly of Waymart, passed away September 6, 2025. She was born March 7, 1953. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Fetcho, Philip and Edith Wells Scorzafava.
Kathy grew up in Oneonta, NY and the Carbondale, Pa. Area. She was a graduate of Ben Franklin High School, class of 1971 and was a graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Individual and Family Studies, College of Human Development and a Minor in English.
At Penn State, she met the love of her life and husband of 33 years, Dana J. Reed. Dana passed away on April 14, 2010, and part of Kathy went with him.
Kathy held many jobs; secretary, social worker, daycare teacher, substitute teacher at her local schools, video store clerk and domestic engineer.
Kathy loved animals, gardening, drawing, painting, crafting, collecting quotes and stamps, crocheting, and playing computer games. Most of all, she enjoyed being "NONI" to her grandchildren. Kathy volunteered at Western Wayne High School helping with senior projects and assisted the "little ones" at a friend's daycare.
Kathy is survived by her beloved son, Corey Vincent and her daughter-in-law Elisha, her 2 grandchildren Ashtyn Dana and Alivia Gene Reed of Hummelstown, her sister Sharon Scorzafava-Katopski and husband Pete, her adopted brother John Davies, her sisters-in-law Debbie Reed Swingle, Georgann Wells-Reed and brothers-in-law Emil Swingle, John Reed, Joe Hnatko and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her brother Gary Scorzafava and sister-in-law Donna Reed Hnatko.

Robert J. Mikolayczak, 73, of Dalton, Pa., passed away unexpectedly at home on September 4, 2025.
Robert (Bob) was the son of the late Robert S. And Elizabeth M. Mikolayczak.
Bob graduated from West Scranton High School in 1969 and Wikes College, Wilkes Barre, Pa. In 1973 with a degree in Fine Arts.
Bob worked as a graphic artist at Scranton Printing Company before his retirement.
Bob had a love for music and the arts. He was such a "kind soul" that will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Rest easy dear brother!
Bob is survived by his sister, Christine Shaw and husband Danny, a brother Richard and his companion Lori Krukowski, a sister Mary Beth and brother Ronald. Also, his niece and goddaughter Elizabeth Lemoncelli and husband Matthew and his nephew Kevin Mikolayczak and his companion Thalia Pareja.

William B. Sobers, 90, a resident of Roaring Brook Twp., died Saturday at Oak Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation, Taylor. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, the former Alberta Yenchas, in 2024. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Delbert and Sadie Hopkins Sobers.
Bill grew up in South Scranton and was a graduate of South Scranton Central Catholic High School. He was a devout Catholic and was a member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church for 75 years. More recently, he attended St. Eulalia's Church. Bill worked for 61 years at the Scranton Times starting at 11 and a half as a paperboy. Because of his strong work ethic, he held a variety of positions; circulation clerk, substitute branch manager, advertising, composing room apprentice, journeyman printer, staff writer, labor writer, copy editor and Focus writer. He was an Army veteran, a former member of International Typographical Union and was a member of The Newspaper Guild.
Bill was also preceded in death by his sister Ann Marie Rinaldi and her husband Bill.
Surviving are his sister Elizabeth Elvidge and husband Walter, a nephew Walter Elvidge and wife Mary, and their daughter Sarah Edwards and husband Camden, a sister-in-law Barbara Parulis and husband John and their two children.
Bill was blessed to have Toni and Paul, his two "Good Samaritan" neighbors.
The funeral will be Thursday with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Eulalia's Church, Roaring Brook Twp., to be celebrated by Rev. Thomas M. Muldowney. Interment St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the church Thursday from 9 to 10 AM.

Lawrence J. Chiorazzi, 72, a Mayfield resident died unexpectedly at home Thursday evening. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Frances Whitehurst Chiorazzi.
He was a graduate of South Scranton Central Catholic High School and was employed by Entenmanns and McCarthy Flowered Cabs. Larry was an avid Bears fan and while he resided in Chicago became a Cubs fan as well. He looked forward to and attended every air show that came to town. His favorite time of year was summer and traveling to Stone Harbor for family vacations.
Surviving are his children; Chad Chiorazzi and wife Josanne, Scranton, and Gina Chiorazzi and significant other, Michael Kotansky, Sr., Whitehaven, grandchildren; Courtney, Jaxson and Michael, Jr., sisters; Mary Russo, Chicago, Ill., Alice Olenchak and husband Richard, Spring Brook Twp., and Elizabeth Chiorazzi, Scranton, nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by an infant brother Joseph.

Shirley Y. Hurst, 95, a resident of The Pines Senior Living, passed peacefully, surrounded by her loving family Friday afternoon in Hospice of The Sacred Heart, Dunmore. She was the widow of William (Red) Hurst who died in 2008. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late George and Margaret Reif Young.
She was a member of Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church. She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School and formerly was employed by Sew Smart. Shirley was a member of the Girl Scouts for many years, from being a leader to moving up to the Board of Directors of the Scranton Pocono Girl Scouts Council. She volunteered for 18 years for Hospice of The Sacred Heart. She enjoyed crocheting scarves for the homeless at The Pines Senior Living. The family wishes to thank the staff of The Pines, GCMC and Hospice of The Sacred Heart for the excellent care given to Shirley. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be deeply missed.
Surviving are her daughters; Deborah Pugh and husband Donald, Honesdale, Patti Valenti and husband Michael, Stroudsburg, and Sharon Kneiss and husband John, Wilmington, NC., grandchildren; Ian Pugh, Sarah Jane Pugh (Jim Dratwa), Matthew Kneiss (Aimee), Michael Valenti (Janelle), and Justin Valenti (Talia), great grandchildren; Oliver Valenti and Noah and Ezra Dratwa, nieces and nephews.

Marie Diane McHale, of Scranton, passed peacefully from this world into the next on July 15, 2025, after a brief illness.
Marie was born in Newark, New Jersey to the late James and Marie Ciccotti McHale. She was of the Catholic faith.
Miss McHale, her preferred form of address, attended Wheeling College in West Virginia and graduated from Marywood University with her Bachelor's degree in English. She was a gifted English teacher in the Scranton School District for many years.
Marie was a devoted daughter, lovingly caring for her parents until their passing. She was a loyal friend and a champion of the underdog and the misunderstood through her life.
Marie had a deep love and appreciation of nature. She enjoyed tranquil walks, admired beautiful sunsets, listened to the wind, and loved to swim in the ocean. In her younger days, she took great pleasure riding her horse, her "Beloved Tivilly."
Although Marie was an advocate for all animals, she had a special fondness for cats, taking in strays and feeding the feral. Her most recent BFF (Best Feline Friend), Gracie, senses her loss and misses her company.
Marie received outstanding care throughout her stay at Geisinger CMC. Dr. Gollamundi, Dr. Jovanovic, and Dr. Siripuram exemplified kindness and compassion at every step of her journey. Thank you.
There are countless angels on this earth. Marie met many of them on the sixth and seventh floors of the hospital. Thank you to the nurses and staff who made her stays there a little easier. Your patience and attention did not go unnoticed.
In addition to her brother, Attorney James T. McHale, Sanibel Island, Florida, nieces, nephews, and cousins, Marie is survived by those who loved her and those whom she loved. You know who you are. She was preceded in death by her sister, Kathleen McHale Vivian.
A celebration of Marie's life will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, commencing at 11:00 a.m. at the August J. Haas Funeral Home, 202 Pittston Avenue, Scranton, PA 18505. All are welcome. Interment is private.

Patrick J. O'Brien, South Abington Township, passed away at home on July 30th, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Scranton on March 7, 1953, he was the son of the late Dr. John P. O'Brien and Mary Baker O'Brien. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Anita B. O'Brien, sons, P.J. O'Brien (Bethlehem); and John O'Brien and wife, Shannon (Yardley); grandchildren Rory O'Brien (Bethlehem) and Jack and Brooke O'Brien (Yardley).
Patrick (Pat) also is survived by sisters Kay Draper, Margate, NJ, Chris Condon (John), Columbia, MD, and Susan Brink (Don), Moscow; brothers John O'Brien, Decatur, GA, and Dr. Thomas O'Brien, Jefferson Township; and many nieces and nephews. Pat was preceded in death by siblings Meg Rodgers (Hugh J), Jane McLaughlin (Richard), and Joseph O'Brien.
Pat was a graduate of Scranton Prep and the University of Scranton. He was employed as a very dedicated Manager for the Penguin Group for the majority of his professional career. Most importantly, Pat was a selfless husband, father, and grandfather, who took great joy in his family. He exuded and instilled in his children his core values of authenticity, humility, and hard work. He was an avid athlete who loved all sports and took pride in his gardening and numerous house projects.
In accordance with Pat's wishes, there will be no viewing, and private services will be conducted at the convenience of the family.

Shirley was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she loved to travel with her husband. She will be deeply missed by her family. Kathleen Lahey
July 20th, 2025
Kathleen Lahey, 65, passed away of natural causes on July 20th, 2025 in her home in Clarks Summit. Kathy was the daughter of Patrick Lahey and Margaret (Peggy) Flynn Lahey of Scranton.
Kathy lived most of her life in the Nativity section of South Scranton, She worked at Head Start as an aide and then as a school bus driver until her vision started to fail and she retired.
Kathy is remembered for her love of children, and while she never had children of her own, she was incredibly beloved by her many nieces and nephews, with whom she was very close. Her nieces and nephews have fond memories of laughing at her witty one-liners, sleeping over at her house, playing many games of Scrabble, and talking with her late into the night on the phone. She was especially fond of babies and had a gift for soothing a crying baby to sleep.
Kathy was legally blind, and despite or perhaps because of this reality, she had a grace and generosity of spirit like no one else. Kathy accepted everyone for who they were without discrimination or judgement. She welcomed everyone, criticized no one, and loved deeply. She never complained about the challenges she was dealt in life, but continuously expressed gratitude for the love and family that surrounded her. The legacy Kathy leaves behind is not one of fortune or numerous descendants, but rather she was a model for all of us for how we ought to treat one another: with generosity, love, and an open heart.
Kathy was predeceased by her parents, Patrick Lahey and Margaret (Peggy) Flynn Lahey of Scranton, and her niece Bridgid Herlihy. She is survived by four brothers, Richard (Patti), of Clarks Summit; Robert (Donna), of Scottsdale, Ariz.; P.J. (Chelle) and Michael, of Scranton; and three sisters, Ellen (Tom) Herlihy, of Geneseo, N.Y.; Mary Alice (Michael) Hales and Trudi (Frank) Kane, both of Scranton. She also leaves behind 16 nieces and nephews; and 14 great-nieces and great-nephews; all of whom loved her dearly.
The family would like to thank the Visiting Angels who took such good care of her and all her friends at the Blind Association who brought her so much joy.
Calling hours will be 9:00 to 11:00 am at the church Thursday morning. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday July 24, 2025 at 11:00 at Sacred Heart Church on Prospect Ave in Scranton to be celebrated by Rev Jonathan Kuhar, Pastor, with interment to follow at Cathedral Cemetery. Carl "Duke" Shiner, 82, a resident of Old Forge, died unexpectedly Saturday evening in Geisinger CMC after being stricken ill at home. He was the husband of the late Jean Ann Young Shiner who died in 2000. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Carl Jr. and Wanda Baden Shiner. He was of the Roman Catholic Faith, was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and earned his engineering degree from ICS. He was most recently employed by LaBella Associates. He was a former member of the Pa. National Guard. He loved his family and his work, Carl was the gentle giant and pillar of his family. Surviving are his son Christopher Shiner and wife Susan, Clarks Summit, daughters Lisa Drake and husband Stan, Folsum, and Noelle Drozdick and husband Brian, Eynon, grandchildren; Andrea and Devon Shiner, Ronald and wife Karah Drake and Nicholas and wife Kira Drake and Abigail and Tyler Drozdick, brother Gary Shiner and wife Lenore, Scranton, sister Arlene Maros and husband Michael, Olyphant, and his companion of 23 years, Shirl Terbovich, and nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a son Mark Anthony Shiner and a brother Chester and a sister Gloria Dymkowski.

Sherry O'Malley
July 18th, 2025
Sherry O'Malley, 68, of Dickson City, passed away on July 18th, 2025, after a long battle with dementia. She was born on June 13th, 1957, in Scranton Pennsylvania, to Elizabeth Duffy and Thomas Maroon. Sherry was the eldest of five children and a graduate of West Side High School.
Sherry met the love of her life, Paul O'Malley, while working at Oppenheim's candy counter. They married in 1978 and resided in Dickson City for over 30 years. She was immensely proud of her family and leaves them with many beautiful memories. She devoted countless hours to supporting her children, making sure they had all that they yearned for; whether that was a hand-crafted prom dress, meals delivered to college, or working two jobs to pay for their education. Sherry created a home that everyone wanted to return to. She was always prepared for company and all were made to feel welcome at her table. In the O'Malley home, the plates were full, the air was filled with laughter and the seats were rarely empty.
Sherry was a gifted chef with an unrivaled passion for creating uniquely delicious dining experiences. Her career began in the kitchen of St. Peter's Cathedral Rectory. She went on to head kitchens at several local restaurants while maintaining a successful private baking business. Sherry was a devoted Todd Rundgren fan and enjoyed sewing, knitting and tending her beautiful backyard garden.
Sherry is survived by her children, Kerry (Adam) Jaffe, Molly (Andrew) Murphy, Nicholas O'Malley, Thomas (Katelyn) O'Malley, grandchildren, Tucker and Luna Jaffe, Eamon O'Malley, Grace and Lily Murphy and siblings Kathy and Thomas O'Malley. She is preceded in death by her husband Paul, grandson Finley O'Malley and siblings, Joey O’Malley and Maureen Wilden.
Sherry was known to be an ambitious, strong and extremely independent woman. Sadly, that would all come to an end in 2009, when she was diagnosed with frontotemporal lobe dementia. After enduring the devastating effects of this disease for far too many years, she is finally at peace with the love of her life…her "Paulie O'Malley with the pretty blue eyes".
Her family has chosen to hold a private memorial service. Friends wishing to honor Sherry are invited to donate in her name to The Association for the Frontotemporal Degeneration or The Northeast Suicide Prevention Initiative.

Alura Lispi

Alura Lispi, 91, of the Greenwood Section of Moosic, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 17, 2025, after fighting pancreatic cancer for one year. She was the wife of the late Tino Lispi, who died June 7, 2005.
Born in Pittston, Pa. On December 6, 1933, daughter of the late Arthur and Anna (Musto) Lori, she graduated from Pittston Township High School in 1951 and then attended Marywood College. She married Tino in 1953 and lived in the Cork Lane section of Pittston, Alura worked in the office at her father's dress shop, Lori Dress Co., in Pittston before moving to Greenwood in 1964, when she became a member of the Greenwood Card Club and eventually club president. She was a volunteer at Moses Taylor Hospital and in her later years became a devoted travel agent for many companies, including AMF Travel and Sunshine Direct.
Alura had a beautiful Jazz-like singing voice, which, when prompted, would be enjoyed at family gatherings. She was an amazing cook and baker who found her greatest happiness in preparing meals for her family. For over 40 years, she and Tino spent winters in Delray Beach, FL, where they forged lifelong friendships with fellow snowbirds. She also traveled extensively to Italy visiting family and friends. She was particularly fond of cruising, visiting numerous ports and destinations throughout her life.
After being widowed for eight years, Alura met her wonderful companion, Joe. Together they continued the Florida tradition in Ft. Lauderdale, took cruises twice yearly, traveling to Italy and Punta Cana. They enjoyed Casino weekends in Atlantic City and Tioga Downs, NY and supported Penn State football even attending some Bowl Games. Alura became an enthusiastic Detroit Lions fan through her connection to her maid of honor and longtime friend whose grandson played for the team.
Alura treasured her 10-year timeshare in Cancun, where she hosted yearly girlfriend getaways with the Greenwood Card Club and other dear friends, creating countless happy memories over their many years together.
Surviving is her partner of 12 years, Joe Polaski, Old Forge, daughters Elaine Lispi (Ed Lipski), Clarks Green, Emily Stevens, Dunmore, son Tino Lispi (Fran), Lake Harmony, sister Andrea Musto (Charles), Pittston, brothers Arthur (Rosemary), Pittston, Aldan (Madaline), Downington, Adrian (Becky), Exeter, brothers-in-law Aleandro Lispi, Scranton and Bill Lombardi (Camille), S. Abington Twp., Grandchildren Liza Stevens (Justin Little), Kyle Stevens, Trey Lipski, Lex Lispi and Lance Lispi, great-grandchildren Julian Collier and Jay Little, and nieces and nephews who adored her.
She was also preceded in death by sisters-in-law Elida Lombardi and Sue Lispi.
The family extends special gratitude to the staff at Hospice of the Sacred Heart home caregivers, especially Holly and the girls, for their compassionate care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Divine Mercy Parish, St. Joseph's Church, 312 Davis St. Scranton, on Tuesday at 10 AM by Rev. Maude M. Heim-Klara, 86, formerly of South Scranton, a resident of Elan Gardens, passed away Friday at Geisinger CMC. She was the widow of Theodore Klara who died in 2000. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Warren and Jennie Sullivan Heim. She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish and was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School.
Maude was a retired employee of Yolanda's Beauty Salon where she was a cosmetologist. Surviving are loving nieces, nephews and caregivers. The family would like to thank the entire staff and caregivers at Elan Gardens for all the care and compassion given to Maude. She was also preceded in death by her companion of over 20 years, Peter F. Delfino, Sr.

Mary Ann 'Nancy' Togher, 86, a lifelong Nativity Section of Scranton resident, passed away peacefully Wednesday, with her loving family by her side in the Oak Ridge RHC in Taylor. She is now reunited with her loving husband of 55 years, James P. Togher, who died in 2015. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late James and Irene Merrick Ratchford.
Nancy was a graduate of South Scranton Central Catholic High School, Class of 1956. She was a lifelong member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church until its closure and presently is a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish. She volunteered at many Nativity Church summer festivals, the Altar and Rosary Society events, SCOLA, Friends of the Library, and the American Cancer Society. Nancy also enjoyed reading, crosswords, Jumbles, quilting and couponing. She loved traveling, collecting destination magnets and she was a voracious collector of sugar and condiment packets from dining establishments. She was soft spoken and had a never give up attitude, listening with a sympathetic ear and sharing good wisdom. She enjoyed the outdoor concerts at Nay Aug Park. The family wishes to thank Hospice of The Sacred Heart and her many caregivers over the years.
Surviving is her daughter Mari Jerauld and husband Terry, Lafayette, NJ, her son Daniel Togher, Grafton, WV, a daughter-in-law, Dorrien Togher, Clarks Summit, grandchildren; Matthew, Kyle, Kristen Jerauld, Kelsey Jerauld and husband Sean O'Boyle, James and Drew Togher, and Jaxson Spears, her brother Gerald Ratchford and wife Rita, NC, a sister Alyce Joyce, FL., a sister-in-law Barbara Togher, Taylor, nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her son James B. Togher, a brother Michael Ratchford and a sister Eileen Ratchford, and a brother-in-law Jack Togher and a brother-in-law Joseph Joyce.

James J. Santomauro

On June 24, 2025 James J. Santomauro, known as Jimmy, passed away peacefully at home after a valiant battle with a rare form of cancer. He leaves behind his loving wife Lina Lispi Santomauro, who fought by his side. As the baby of the family, he is survived by his sisters, Dr. Angela Loavenbruck, Mary Psaris, and his brother Frank Santomauro and his wife Joanne; 13 nieces and nephews and numerous greats. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Marie Florence Santomauro.
Born on 7-11-1955 in West Scranton, he attended St. Francis Cabrini School and served as an altar boy at St. Lucy's Church. In 1973 he graduated Scranton Central High School then Villanova in 1977 with a BS in Business Administration and a major in Finance. While there he won several business awards.
Forty four years of experience began in 1981 when he trained as a stock and bond broker on Wall Street for Merrill Lynch. After four years he was asked to manage a local firm, Butcher and Singer, Inc. From there he formed his business as a principal for Cadaret Grant and was a broker dealer, estate planner and financial advisor until his untimely death.
He and his wife Lina married in Italy in his mother-in-law, Assunta Lispi's home town. They resided at Lake Nuangola for the past 30 years after remodeling a one hundred year old lakefront cottage. He loved to fish and kayak and smoke the occasional cigar. He loved and hated the game of golf and was known to throw a club now and then. His skill in the kitchen was legendary and he volunteered at a local soup kitchen and then was accepted to the Culinary Institute of America. He decided he'd rather cook for family and friends.
Jim and Lina bought a villa in Stuart, Florida and spent winters there for the past seventeen years. All in all it was a wonderful life.

Donald A. Naeher

Donald A. Naeher, 87, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Friday evening. His wife is the former Roberta Buchner. The couple were married for 64 years.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Arthur and Elizabeth Statsman Naeher, he was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Class of 1956. Following high school, Don began his career as a printer at P.A. Hutchison Company. In the early 1960s, he served as a member of the Army National Guard. Soon after Don's marriage to Roberta, her parents, Herman and Louise Buchner, helped him find his true calling as a floral designer. Together, they continued the family tradition as owners and operators of Buchner's Flower & Gift Shop, Inc. on Cedar Avenue in Scranton until their retirement in 2000.
Don was a member of Hickory Street United Presbyterian Church, its Adult Fellowship, and its Decorating Committee. For many years, he used his gifts and talents to beautify the church's sanctuary, especially on Palm Sunday, Easter, and Christmas.
Don was a member of the Schiller Lodge #345, F&AM, the Eastern Travelers Bowling League, and the Junger Mannerchor of Scranton. For several years, he served as the Committee Chairman of Cub Scout Pack 16 and as a committee member of Boy Scout Troop 16 in Scranton. He was proud that both of his sons and a grandson earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
Don dedicated his life to his family. He was a gentle, quiet man who never had an unkind word to say about anyone.
In addition to his wife, Roberta, Don is survived by his sons David and wife, Karis, of Clarks Summit, and John and wife, Kathleen, of Falls Church, Virginia. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Emma, Sarah, Samuel, Jacob, and Rebekah Naeher.
Don was preceded in death by a sister, Audrey Naeher, who died in childhood, and by aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The funeral will be on Saturday, June 21, with a service at 10:00 AM at Hickory Street United Presbyterian Church, 435 Hickory St., Scranton, by the Rev. David S. Brague, Transitional Pastor. Interment will follow in Dunmore Cemetery. Friends may call at the church for an hour of viewing from 9:00 AM until the time of the service.

Marie Violini, 96, a longtime resident of Scranton died Thursday at Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, Scranton. She was the widow of Joseph Violini, who died May 24, 2019. They were married 68 years. She was the daughter of the late Rose and John Barbini, and sister to John Barbini Jr., Pittston.
Marie was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church and its Altar and Rosary Society. She also belonged to the Young at Heart Club. As a young woman she attended Cosmetology School and worked as a hairdresser for several years before getting married and starting a family. She enjoyed traveling with her husband Joseph, and couldn't resist an occasional trip to the Casinos in Atlantic City. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. The family would like to thank everyone who provided care to Marie at Gino Merli Veterans Center, and to the staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart.
Surviving are three children, and several grandchildren. Daughter, Linda Shafer and husband William, Laflin. Daughter, Lisa Brojack and husband Paul, Lawton. And son Frank Violini, Downingtown. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Joseph Shafer, Pittston, Jared Shafer and wife Hope, Philadelphia, Sarah Brojack, Camp Hill, Paul Bro jack and wife Amanda, Great Bend, John Violini, Philadelphia, and Gia Violini, Boston, one great-grandchild, Dillan Reese Shafer, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday, June 18, 2025, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. in Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish, Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, 1217 Prospect Avenue, Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Mark J. DeCelles. Entombment, private, in Italian-American Cemetery Mausoleum.

Regina Wesoloski Cooper passed away on May 31, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents Stanley Wesolowski of New York and Regina Mikiewicz Wesoloski of Scranton, and brothers Stanley of Pottstown, John Wesoloski of Scranton, and half brother Thomas Wesoloski of Berwick. Regina was born February 2, 1946, in Scranton. She is survived by her husband, Barry L. Cooper, Scranton, half brothers Edward Wesoloski of Schickinney, Jack Wesoloski of Hunlock Creek, half sister Ann Marie Minnick of Bloomsburg, nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania. Regina married Barry on August 24, 1963 at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Minooka. She graduated from Scranton Technical High School in 1963. Her career consisted of employment with the Life Insurance Company of Virginia, Industrial Supply Corporation, and Commonwealth Bank in Richmond, Virgina.

Our beloved Phyllis Kearney born on August 18, 1950, passed away at home at the age of 74 with her family by her side. She fought with grace, faith and dignity. She was a devoted Catholic her entire life.
She was the daughter of the late Richard and Florence Lucke Kearney. Phyllis worked in various dental laboratories in the area and retired from the Gino Merli Veterans Center.
She is survived by her brother Richard and wife Paula Kearney, her nephew Keith and wife Suzanne Kearney and niece Stacy and husband JB Bucha, also two great nieces Charlotte and Caroline. Also surviving is her dear friend and caregiver Andrea Komsisky

Mary Claire Evans O'Boyle, 69, a Scranton resident, died Friday morning in Linwood Nursing and Rehab Center. She was the widow of James O'Boyle. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas, Sr. and Ruth Gilhooley Evans. She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and Empire Beauty School. She was formerly employed by Dr. Peter Cognetti as a receptionist. She was an avid reader and a loving wife, sister and aunt who cared deeply for her family. She hosted many family celebrations.
Surviving are a sister Carol Dippre and husband Kenneth, Roaring Brook Twp., a brother John Evans, Scranton, nieces and nephews and a great niece and great nephews. She was also preceded in death by two brothers; Thomas Evans, Jr. and Brian Evans.

William F. Donovan

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father who departed peacefully from this world Monday afternoon in Regional Hospital. William F. Donovan is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Judy Frable. Born in Minooka, he was the son of the late Francis and Esther Parfitt Donovan.
He was a graduate of South Scranton Central Catholic High School and was a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish at Nativity of Our Lord Church. He was a US Navy Veteran who was stationed in Florida. Upon his return to Scranton, he became a member of the Scranton Police Department Motorcycle Division where he led many parades in the city and escorted many dignitaries to and from the Wilkes-Barre- Scranton airport. He initiated the Scranton Police Dept. Scuba Diving Team which contributed to the recovery of many accidental drowning victims in Scranton and surrounding areas until his retirement. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Blue Knights.
Bill was a man of unwavering strength and gentle spirit, he touched the lives of everyone he met with kindness and wisdom. He was a devoted husband and loving father who displayed unconditional support to his family and friends. He was a man who always put others first and was a real role model for us all. A true pillar of strength, he leaves a legacy of cherished memories.
Also surviving are his daughters; Jill (Marc) Delappi and Holly (Nick) Riggi, a sister Donna Howard and nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a grandson Eugene Donovan and two sisters; Helen Otto and Barbara O'Hare.

Joseph F. Geiger, Sr.

Joseph F. Geiger, Sr., a lifelong resident of South Scranton, passed away peacefully on April 12. His wife of 59 years, Alice Zeller Geiger, passed away in 2018. Born November 14, 1925, he was the youngest of nine children of Charles and Mary Merten Geiger. He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School and attended the University of Scranton. Joe was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Formoe in the South Pacific. He received the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the China Service Medal, the Navy Occupation Medal, and the Philippines Liberation ribbon. He was employed by the Veterans Administration and later the U.S. Postal Service for 37 years and was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers for 75 years. He served as the commander for VFW Post 3451 for one year and the Quartermaster for 17 years. He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church then St. Paul of the Cross. He was an exceptional husband, father, and grandfather, a devout Catholic, a hard worker, and a good neighbor.
Also surviving are his son, Attorney Joseph F. Geiger, Jr., his daughters, Dr. Anne Geiger and husband Patrick Hartman, Amy Regan and husband Paul, Alicen Devers and husband Robert. His grandchildren who he was so proud of: Dr. Joseph F. Geiger, III, Jacob Geiger, Caroline Geiger, triplets Paxton, Megan, and Matthew Hartman, Maura Greenfield and husband Matthew, Dr. Paul Regan and wife Elizabeth, Kate Regan, Joshua Devers, and Emma Devers, two great-grandchildren, a special niece, Margie Kelly, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law Kelly Regan and his eight siblings.
His children would like to thank Robert and the staff at Allied Terrace and Chris and the staff of Allied Hospice Home Health for their dedication, kindness, and compassionate care.
A funeral liturgy will be held Thursday morning at 10 am at St. Teresa of Calcutta/Sacred Heart, 1217 Prospect Ave., Scranton, Pa 18505. Patricia A. Valtos, 78, a resident of Peckville, died Tuesday at home after a brief illness. Her husband of 57 years is John Valtos. They met in high school and were together ever since. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Wanda Mierzejewski.
She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Peckville. Patricia was employed in various magistrates offices in the Lackawanna County Court System, retiring after 25 years. She was self employed in several businesses, two of the best known were Sophisticated Lady and Adorables. Patricia was known for many years as Grammy Pat at the Viewmont Mall where she passed lollipops out to children at her stand. She was generous to everyone she met, and her many acts of kindness to friends and strangers alike brought her joy. She was a loving wife and mother who will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her.
Also surviving is her husband John Valtos, son Jason Valtos, Esq., Newark, DE., and several close relatives.
A special thank you to Traditional Home Health Care and the friends who helped Pat when she needed it.

Audry Dominick passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, she was 87. Present was her loving husband Edward J. Dominick and daughter Maureen Carlon. Preceding her in death was her son Edward A. Dominick. She leaves her daughters Maureen Abou-Zeid Carlon (Mucio) and Patty Dominick. Audry was blessed with four grandchildren, Dominique Abou Zeid, Michael Abou Zeid (Katherine), Gabrielle Abou Zeid Allen (Nicholas) and Brandon Ward. She also had four bonus grandchildren, Hailey, Fred, Christian and Lily Santiago. In her later years Hailey and Fred became a huge blessing to her and Eddie.
Audry is the daughter of Patrick Cox and Margaret Cox Morano. She had five siblings. Brothers Patrick Cox, deceased (Marylyn) and Jack Cox, deceased (Ann). Her sisters Ila O'Malley, deceased, (Jack), Lea Andrews, deceased (Mike) and Judy Kalinoski, deceased (John).
Audry and Eddie were a love story for the ages. They met at the tender age of 13 at South Scranton Junior High, they attended and graduated from Scranton Technical High School and have been inseparable ever since! Most recently this past October 4th, they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. Eddie was the love of her life and she was his.
Upon graduating from high school she accepted a position with Prudential Insurance. In 1959 upon the birth of their first child she chose to stay home and raise her family. By 1985 she returned to the work force with Heff Jones and finally retired in 1996.
Audry was an amazing wife, mother and friend. She loved to travel, but her greatest joy took place in the kitchen where she fed the body and souls of all who entered. Her wit, humor and love will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Dennes J. Reese, 85, a resident of Dunmore, died Tuesday in Allied Hospice. He was the husband of the former Norma Vail Reese who died in 2024. Born in Dunmore, he was the son of the late William J. And Kathryne F. Reeser Reese.
He was a graduate of Dunmore High School and was formerly employed by Trane Corporation. He formerly worked for the Globe Store and Eastern Specialty. In 1990, he and his late wife became the caretakers of Forest Hills Cemetery in Dunmore. He was an avid hunter.
He was also preceded in death by two sons; Deric and Dwane, and a sister Karen R. McAndrew.
The funeral will be private with inurnment in Forest Hills Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Forest hills Cemetery care of Fidelity Bank, Dunmore, PA.

Joseph M. Mullen, 93, a South Scranton resident, died Friday in Allied Skilled Nursing Center. He was the husband of the former Margaret Newland who died in 2020 and the couple were married for 65 years. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Mark and Mary Steinbach Mullen. He was a graduate of St. Mary of The Assumption High School and was a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church. He was a member of St. Mary of The Assumption Parish until its closure. Prior to his retirement, he was employed locally as a factory worker.
Surviving are his children; William Mullen, Scranton, Elizabeth Bergeski and husband Dave, Throop, Joseph Mullen and wife Peggy, Halstead, Margaret Hurst, Ft. Myers, FL., Thomas Mullen and wife Theresa, Scranton, Barbara Williams, Mary Mullen, and Diane Mullen, all of Scranton, 12 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by two daughters; Jean Lockner and Linda Mullen, daughter-in-law Debra Mullen, two sons-in-law; Dave Turner and Gary Williams, also by brothers and sisters; John and Mark Mullen, Josephine Coggins, Katherine Wright, Margaret Lakston, Marie Clark, Leona Fahey and Ruth Mercuri. The family would like to thank the staff at Allied Skilled Nursing, especially those on 2 North for the care and compassion given to Joseph.

On Thursday morning, March 13, 2025, Dorothy Weller Bracey, of Scranton, went home to be with her Lord, and to be reunited with her parents: Frank & Pearl Weller and siblings: Earl, Fran, Cyril, Lynette, Ruth, June and Betty. Dorothy was 91 years old.
Dorothy was a graduate of South Catholic High School, where she met the love of her life, her husband, Paul Bracey. They were married on May 18, 1957. Dorothy was a woman of strong faith, endless love, and incredible upper body strength. She devoted her life to serving others as a school lunchroom mom, Meals on Wheels driver and volunteer at local food pantries, to name a few. Gardening and observing nature in her own back yard (especially the squirrels) gave her great joy. She also enjoyed quilting in the Nativity Quilting Club and recently recruited many of her grandchildren to take up the art.
She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 68 years, Paul Bracey; her children, Anne Swaha & spouse Frank, Scranton; Paul Bracey, Wilkes-Barre; Mary Ellen Hardcastle & spouse Scott, Cataula, GA; Joan Langan & spouse Mark, Scranton; Dorothy O'Connor & spouse Sean, Waverly; her 17 grandchildren: Michael, Matthew, Cathy & Patrick Langan; Ryan Bracey; Josh, Julie, Timothy, Daniel & Katie Hardcastle; Alex, Sean & Kelly Langan; Theresa, Sarah, Marie & Sean O'Connor; 19 Great-Grand Children, and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Nativity of Our Lord Church, St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, by Reverend Jonathan Kuhar, pastor. Assunta "Susan" Piccolino, 78, a resident of South Scranton, died Wednesday morning in Geisinger CMC. She was the widow of Antonio Piccolino who died in 1984. Born in Spignosaturnia, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Guilio and Maria Antonia Ciccione Tuccillo.
She was a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish and she was the owner and operator of Lucia's Pizza until its closure in 2001. Afterwards, she was employed by the IHM Center for 12 years until her retirement. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Geisinger CMC and the U Penn for the wonderful care given to our mother over the years.
Surviving are her son John A. Piccolino, Lake Ariel, her daughter Lucia Murphy and husband Glynn, Tafton, Glynn's children; Amanda Muha and husband Sean, Moscow, Glynn Murphy, Jr., and wife Shelby, Archbald, and Hallie Murphy and significant other Jarod Paisley, Wilkes-Barre, her granddaughter Lena Piccolino, Lake Ariel, two sisters; Lina Tuccillo and husband Domenico Marricco, and Rosina Tuccello, all of Italy, nieces and nephews. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Lucia Tuccillo, Anna Tuccillo, Giovanna Tuccillo, daughter-in-law Sherrie Miller, Lake Ariel, and she was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law Antonio Massa. She was also preceded in death by three brothers; Vincenzo, Arturo, and Giuseppe Tuccillo.

Shea who died January 9, 2013 and the couple were married for 32 years. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Hugo, Jr. and Helen Flowers Yaeger. She was of the Protestant Faith and was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. She was a retired employee of the Lackawanna County Prison and was a member of the Waldorf Club. Patricia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and sister. She was a friend to all.
Surviving are children; Daniel Shea and Kelly Shea, both of Scranton, grandchildren Danny Shea and Alayna Shea, and sisters; Elsa Nelson, Cathy Shiner, a brother Leo Yaeger and wife Rose, and sister Carlene Yaeger and companion Michael Rorick, all of Scranton, nieces and nephews and cousins. She was also preceded in death by a sister Hilda Howarth and a brother Hugo Yaeger.

Theresa M. Kolodzieski, 88, a resident of Scranton, died Sunday morning in Hospice of The Sacred Heart, Dunmore. She was the widow of the late Walter Kolodzieski, Jr. who died in 1989. Born in Archbald, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Angeline Jardine Esgro. She attended Scranton public schools and was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. She was employed for many years in the garment industry and in her later years she ran the buffet at Terry's Diner. Theresa enjoyed baking, old movies, Columbo, and retelling stories of her youth, but most of all she simply loved spending time with her family. The family would like to thank the staff of Sacred Heart Hospice for their kindness, love and support they offered to our mother and to all our family.
Surviving are two sons; Walter Kolodzieski, Taylor, Dominick Kolodzieski and wife Lisa, Scranton, two daughters; Debra Winn and Theresa King and husband Joseph, all of Scranton, 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, a sister Angeline Mies, Old Forge, brothers-in-law Edward, Gerald and Anthony Kolodzieski and many nieces and nephews. Carol Baker

Carol Baker, 75, of Scranton was called home by her Heavenly Father on February 12, 2025 after a 40-year battle with multiple sclerosis, cancer, osteoarthritis and a host of other ailments which would have taken a lesser person much sooner. She was surrounded by her loving family throughout her long, difficult journey until the Lord and Gram Krake (not necessarily in that order) welcomed her to eternal glory. Carol's devoted and dutiful husband of 54 years, Dave, and the love of her life and only son, David, were fortunate to be by her side when she departed earthly life. Family and close friends were the driving force of Carol's life and she loved nothing more than to host them at her home, her pool or anywhere else. While she often let on as if she were put out by all that hospitality, service to others was above all else in her heart and mind.
Born in Scranton, Carol was the first of six children of the late Raymond M. Krake and Ann Marie "Nancy" (Noone) Krake. In her younger years, she was a member of Nativity of Our Lord parish where she attended grade school before graduating from South Catholic High School. After marriage to Dave, she became a longtime member of St. Mary of the Assumption parish in South Scranton, where for many years she generously volunteered her time and talents to the church and grade school. Prior to marriage, she was employed at the William Nasser CPA Accounting Firm in Scranton. Upon welcoming her only child to the world, Carol embarked on a 53-year journey as a selfless mother, wife, homemaker, gardener, volunteer and food aficionado. The things she loved most were watching her son and his many cousins grow up, learning about her family through genealogical research, hosting guests in her home and preparing countless meals for family and friends. While she and Dave traveled the world in earlier years, her greatest pleasure was "just being home" near those she loved and who loved her more than she knew.
Carol, Dave and David would like to sincerely thank her immediate and extended family, medical team, caregivers and lifelong friends Diane, Sharon and Sue for their unwavering support, prayers and understanding through her decades-long illnesses. What a long, strange trip it’s been...having people who loved her so much eased her burden, whether she ever specifically said so or not. Carol's family would like to especially thank the staff of Gino J. Merli Veterans Center and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the superior care and assistance they provided when she needed it most. Lastly, Carol's son would like to acknowledge and thank his father for the unconditional love, care, companionship and perseverance he provided Carol through every day of their 60-year love story. No man could ask for a better wife, no son a better mother, no parents a better daughter.
Along with husband Dave and son David, Carol is survived by her beloved siblings Nancy Evans and husband Wayne; Diane Coleman; Pam Kraft and husband Jim; Raymond Krake and wife Nancy; sister-in-law Mary Lou Ross and husband Robert; brother-in-law Joseph Baker and wife Barbara; sister-in-law Suzanne Baker and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom brought such joy to Carol's life. She loved you all more than words can ever say. She was blessed to have been surrounded by you all.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, legends in their own right, Raymond M. Krake and Nancy "Gram" (Noone) Krake, parents-in-law Ralph and Catherine (Brier) Baker, beloved brother Michael Krake, and brother-in-law William Baker, all of whom are welcoming her into the ecstasy of painless, eternal life with her Lord and Savior. May God have mercy on those who bravely and quietly endure chronic illness. Walk with Jesus, Mom...this life is over, suffering is done, your reward has come, the race is won.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Muldowney at Nativity of Our Lord Church, 633 Orchard Street, Scranton on Wednesday, February 19, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Friends are welcome to call in the church sanctuary prior to mass from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Following mass, interment will be at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Arrangements are by August J. Haas Funeral Home, Scranton, PA. In keeping with Carol's simple, low-key approach to life, those attending mass are encouraged to dress casually and comfortably.

She was formerly employed by Manhattan Shirt Co. and she was a member of the ILGW Union.
Katie was a beloved sister and aunt who would do anything for her family and friends. The family wishes to give a special thank you to the staff of 2 South in Allied SNF for the loving care and attention given to Katie.

Robert A. (Bob) Burns, Sr., 81, a resident of Madisonville Township, Pa., passed away Wednesday morning at home. Born June 14, 1943, in Olyphant, he was the son of the late Robert and Mabel Sanderson Burns.
Bob was a graduate of Blakely High School, Class of 1960, and The University of Scranton, Class of 1964. He was an Independent Insurance Broker and was owner of Burns Ruddy Insurance, Dunmore.
Bob was an original member of The Calvin United Presbyterian Church now First United Presbyterian Church of Lackawanna Valley, serving as treasurer for 58 years, member and past president Blakely Peckville Lions Club, member of Kingsbury Lodge 466 Masons, and in his younger years he was a volunteer with the Wilson Fire Company, Peckville.
Bob loved to hunt and fish, play at the slots at the casinos, family game nights, and play Mexican Train with family and friends.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, the former Linda Kearney, son Robert A. Burns, Jr. and wife Cindy, Milford, grandsons; Colin, Logan, and granddaughter Caity, Milford, son Paul Burns and wife Tricia, granddaughters Victoria and Caitlin, grandson Chris, brother James and wife Dawn, North Carolina, sister -in-law Pat Koellner and husband Charles, Dublin, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was a loving and caring husband, father and son and will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.
Bob was especially grateful for the outstanding care from his "Dream Team", Dr. Sean McCall, and his nurse Maria, Dr. Jacqueline Lee, Dr. Chris Peters, and Dr. Lisa Thomas.
The family would like to thank Traditional Home Hospice for their compassionate care of Bob during his illness.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Ernest A. and Pierina Belardi Rossi. She was of the Catholic faith and was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. She was employed locally in the banking industry. Audrey was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister who will be deeply missed.

Vincent James Aita

Vincent James Aita, 80, a resident of Old Forge, died peacefully Monday in Allied Skilled Care Center. His wife of 53 years is the former Grace Elaine Pricci. Born in Pittston, he was the son of the late Vincent James and Angela Cannerossi Aita. He attended Pittston Township High School and was a graduate of King's College in 1966. Jim was a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish. He was devoted to his faith, in his younger years he was an altar boy.
Jim was employed by The Unemployment Office and Consumer Protection until his retirement. After he retired, he worked for the August J. Haas Funeral home for many years. He was well loved by his co-workers and friends and never hesitated to put a smile on their faces. He was a member of UNICO and was a devoted member of the Dunmore Lions Club for 50 years.
Jim loved going to the gym, he was there at 5 AM and met so many wonderful friends. He was a member of the Wyoming Rod and Gun Club where he hunted and enjoyed happy times with his nephews. In 1986 he ran the Marine Corps Marathon and even ran up Montage Mountain.
Jim and Elaine loved to travel including Myrtle Beach, Florida, Lancaster, Savannah, and Wildwood Crest. Many thanks to his nieces Susan Wesnak and Kate Bellas for their kindness, love and care of Jim, and thanks to all who were there for him to the very end including Chaplain Rev. Gerlaine from Allied Hospice, Dr. Thomas Neill and the staff of Allied Nursing Center and Allied Hospice.
He was also preceded in death by his brother Patrick Aita, sisters Carmel Montini and her husband Toni, Rosaria Aita, Angela Aita and a nephew Richard Montini and a brother-in-law Frank Pricci. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Eleanore Aita and Eileen Pricci, nieces and nephews; Anthoni Montini (Bonnie), Donald Montini (Debbie), Patricia Koerber, Diana Danbury (Bill), Vincent James Aita (Sue), Marie Fierriero (Lou), Patrick Aita (Tammy), Susan Wesnak (Bruce), Renee Pricci, Charlene Krzan, and Maura Krzan, and many great nieces and nephews and a new great great niece Annie Rose.

Rita D'Angelo

Rita D'Angelo, 92, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loved ones. Her loving husband of 73 years, Leo D'Angelo, preceded her in death just 6 months prior on 7/21/2024. Leo and Rita were inseparable and the family are at peace knowing they are finally back together again.
Born in DuPont PA, she was the daughter of the late Frank Lucas and Nora Fritz Lucas. She was a member of the St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish.
Co-owner of Lasalle the Image Makers, she worked side by side with her husband as a master seamstress for over 6 decades. She made it known that although her husband Leo was the head of the operation, she was the neck, and she turned the head. The couple was legendary in the Scranton community. Her flair for personal style was beyond reproach.
Despite working tirelessly at the family business, her main focus was always to care for her family, her home and her extended family. She meticulously kept her home and personal belongings in perfect order. Rita was fiercely tenacious and never afraid to get her hands dirty. She always had jokes to be told and sarcasm in droves. She enjoyed traveling, music, movies, going out to dinner and the casino.
Her large family will continue to gather and grow in her honor. She will live forever in the hearts and minds of those that loved her.
Also surviving are her children, Leo D'Angelo, Theresa Scopelliti; Jeff D'Angelo and Wife, Diane; Lisa Guse and husband, Gerard; grand children Dallas Shaw, Bryan (Emily) Scopelliti, Dustin (Elizabeth) D'Angelo, Jeremy (Allison) Guse, Kristen (Dylan) Degilio, Michael (Erin) D'Angelo, Jordan (Emily) Guse, Matthew (Katie) D'Angelo, and Joshua (Gina) Guse; 11 great-grandchildren (soon to be 12); nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her siblings Dorthy Warrick, Joesph Lucas and her son in law Frank Scopelliti.

Charles J. Tansits, Jr.

Fulfilling a life well-lived, Charles J. Tansits, Jr., at 104 years old, departed peacefully in the early hours of January 4, 2025 at Gino Merli Veterans Center. His beloved wife of 60 years, Eleanor Osborne, preceded him in 2007.
Born on Cedar Avenue above his father's tailor shop in Scranton on October 11, 1920, he was the son of Charles and Agnes Gaberhell Tansits, Austrian immigrants. A longtime resident of East Mountain since 1926, Chas, as his family and close friends call him, played baseball in his youth with Cox's Tinners, sponsored by Cox Sheet Metal. When the gang played football, they were known as "Little Potatoes are Hard to Peel". The home field for all sports, then, was Hagan's field where the Salvation Army is currently located on River Street. Many great times were also had at the newly built Mattes Community Center (now Marine Corps League Museum Northeast Detachment) during Chas's teenage years and throughout his adult life, including his 100th Birthday celebration in 2020. Chas graduated from St Mary's High School in 1939 where he earned a major letter in football. He then worked at St Mary's Hospital where he met Eleanor, a nursing student, before being drafted into service during World War II.
Chas, or Charlie, served in the 80th division in Patton's 3rd Army, as an Army medic with the 305th Medical battalion, Company D. The first battle after landing on Utah beach (D-day plus 90) was the Battle of Argentan. The 80th division also participated in the Moselle Bridgehead and famously in the Battle of the Bulge. As the war came to a close, the 80th division liberated the Ebensee concentration camp in Austria on 6 May 1945. Charlie was proud of his military service and enjoyed sharing stories about his experiences in the Army. He was awarded the following Medals: US Army Good Conduct, WWII American Campaign 1941-1945, Victory – World War II 1941-1945, European - African - Middle Eastern Campaign (with 4 bronze stars) 1941-1945, Qualification medal – Carbine rifle, Lapel button award – Honorable service, WWII (4) Overseas service bars, WWII Presidential Unit citation. He was a member of the 80th Division Veterans Association and the Battle of the Bulge Association, Inc. After WWII he was a member of the Army Reserve unit for 3 years. For many years, he was a member of the Waldorf Park GAF.
Upon returning from WWII, Chas and El married in 1947 and raised five children. He was a devoted family man who was funny, loving, and hard-working. A talented craftsman, Charlie owned many tools and knew how to fix just about anything! He particularly enjoyed working with wood, and, emanating from his basement workshop in his family home of 66 years on East Mountain Road, Charlie's projects - both large (remodeling his home) and small (furniture and small crafts) - were lovingly created with simplistic beauty and practicality in mind. Charlie was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Church on East Mountain from the time it was built in 1939 until it closed in 2022 and parishioners became members of, now, St Teresa of Calcutta Parish. He continued to follow his Catholic faith, attending weekly Mass at Gino Merli Veterans Center. During his working years, Charlie worked as an upholsterer at Stoehr & Fister, before joining Carl Klein's Upholstery business. Later, he worked for over 30 years as a lithographer at Eureka Printing Company, Art Print Company, and Communicraft Inc. During these years, he bowled in the local industrial leagues. Upon retiring, Charlie began daily walks at Lake Scranton that continued over a span of 40 years and where he met many dear friends. "Charlie Tansits Way" at the top of East Mountain Road near the entrance to Lake Scranton was named in Charlie's honor when he turned 100.
Charlie, affectionately known in his family as "Poppy," is survived by two daughters: Mariellen (Brian) Kaeb, Dr Gloria (Bishop) Wenze; and three sons: Tom (Chris), Ron (Diane), and Chuck (Janice); as well as 13 grandchildren: Krista (Jim) Koch, Ryan Kaeb, Amy Adonizio, Nicole (Nelson) Wenze, Sean Wenze, Jonathan Tansits, Danielle (Zach) Reid, Nicole (Jose) Paramo, Sarah (Brian) Goodfriend, Dr. Megan (Justin) Kraft, Colin (Katie) Tansits Esq., Laura (Dean) Tansits, Katie (Alex) Tansits; 16 great-grandchildren (one more due in June): Madison (Austin) McKenzie, Jared Koch, Owen Kaeb, Delaney Kaeb, Ty Kaeb, Hanna Adonizio, Jake Adonizio, Nathan Reid, Eleanor Reid, Aiden Reid, Alex Kraft, Quinn Kraft, Charlie Tansits, Paige Goodfriend, Lily Fischer, Jemma Fischer; Godsons: Thomas Osborne, Robert Bauer: Goddaughters: Ann Vaida, Sarah Goodfriend; Sister-in-law: Pat Osborne; numerous nieces and nephews in the Osborne and Tansits families, and many friends - all who love Charlie dearly. He is preceded in departure by Eleanor, his parents, two brothers: Ted (Mary) and Bob (Joan), and son-in-law Bishop Wenze (Gloria).
The family would like to thank: (1) Dr. Nicholas Dodge, as well as the nurses and nursing assistants from Residential Home Health Care, who provided them with guidance and care for Charlie during the year he was cared for at home; and (2) the Gino Merli Veterans Center for the exceptional quality of professionalism and care that Charlie received during his residency there. At Gino Merli, everyone - security guards, nursing staff, recreational staff, administration, maintenance staff - was warm, caring, personable, kind, and attentive to Charlie and respectful of his veteran status. Charlie came to enjoy and value the friendship of many of the veterans residing at Gino Merli.

Charlie's family will receive relatives and friends at Haas Funeral Home, Inc., 202 Pittston Ave., Scranton, on Friday, 17 January, from 5-7PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:00am on Saturday, January 18, at St. Peter's Cathedral, 315 Wyoming Avenue, Scranton celebrated by Bishop Joseph C. Bambera.
Inurnment privately at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

Barbara B. Boyd

Barbara B. Boyd, 74, an East Mountain resident, passed away Friday evening in Geisinger CMC after a short battle with Lung Cancer. Her optimism, strength, and courage is something her family will never forget. Her husband of 49 years is Myles Boyd, Jr. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Julio and Malvina Mastro Cacciamani.
She was a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish and was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. She was employed for over 20 years by the Perry Law Firm, where she made long lasting friendships. Following her retirement is where she found her greatest joy in caring for her grandchildren. Barbara was a loving wife, mother, sister, and grandmother who will be deeply missed. She was a doting aunt to her nieces and nephews. Barbara was an avid book reader and enjoyed cooking Italian dinners and spending time with her family. Barbara looked forward to her family vacations to the beach every summer and her longtime holiday traditions. She truly enjoyed life's simplest pleasures, but most especially her time spent with all of her family. Anyone who knew Barbara would tell you that she would do anything for anyone. She was selfless, and tried to help anyone in need. Her family will always be grateful for her light, love, and caring nature.
Also surviving are her daughters; Kelly Miller and husband Erik, Phoenixville, and Kim Noone and husband Patrick, Clarks Summit, grandchildren; Max, Lola and Violet Miller and Ellie, Henry and Ava Noone, two sisters; Carla Haas and husband Robert and Julie Kortawy and husband Joseph, all of Scranton and nieces and nephews. Her family would like to thank the caregivers at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital and the wonderful vascular team and staff who took care of her during her stay at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. Also the family also would like to thank Barbara's primary care physician, Dr. Patrick Connors, who went above and beyond to provide care and guidance to her and her family through this difficult time.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 AM by Rev. Michael Bryant in Nativity of Our Lord Church, St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 633 Orchard St. Friends may call Friday morning at the church from 9 to 10 AM. Inurnment Cathedral Cemetery. Elizabeth "Betty" Brier Phillips

Remember me with smiles, not tears. I was blessed with a full life of 95 years. My life on earth has ended, and I am resting in the arms of Jesus, surrounded by loved ones who have gone before me.
My journey began when I was born on January 16, 1927, to John and Magdalena Landolt Kettel Brier in Scranton, PA. Our blended Brier/Kettel family included one brother, Andrew "Butchie" Kettel, and five sisters: Alma, Rose, and Romaine (Sister Jannette, S.C.C.) Brier, Marie Kettel Olenchak, and Magdalena Brier Sviatko, who all preceded me in death. I was also predeceased by my husband, Leroy, with whom I was blessed to share 65 beautiful years of marriage. I missed him dearly, but we were reunited when I took my last breath on Holy Thursday morning, April 14th.
Surviving are my children, Mari (David) King, Lee (Susan) Phillips, and Nancy (Gary) Cicerini; my grandchildren, Reagan (Matthew) Hill, Evan (Gillian) Phillips, and Elizabeth (Jason) Wilkens; and my three precious great-grandsons, Cael Brier Hill, Levi Shawn Phillips, and Finley James Wilkens. My brother-in-law, Donald Sviatko; sister-in-law, Evelyn Phillips Rodgers; and dearly loved nieces and nephews also survive me.
I cherished life with our family, many friends, and church family at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Scranton's South Side, where I volunteered my time in numerous parish-related functions until its closing. I was a graduate of St. Mary's Grade School and High School (Class of 1944) where I was active in musical productions and a cheerleader for the Moyas basketball team. A faithful mom, I raised my children and then began my career working at Acme Fast Freight. After retiring from Emery Air Freight, I continued living life to the fullest with my husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandsons, extended Brier/Kettel family and friends.
I treasured the countless family vacations, reunions, backyard picnics, and Sunday dinners. I enjoyed playing cards with the "club girls", Saturday dinners with the "gang", and dancing with Lee to the sounds of the Big Bands.
Joseph J. Symuleski, 85, a resident of Moosic, died Sunday evening in Abington Manor. His wife of 61 years is the former Margaret Bonavoglia. Born in Moosic, he was the son of the late Joseph and Helen Koda Symuleski. He was a member of St. Paul Of The Cross Parish and was a graduate of Moosic High School. He was formerly employed by Casual Sportswear and retired from Sacred Hearts Church where he was employed for 22 years in the maintenance department. He was the founder and played guitar for the Polka Tones for many years. Also surviving is a son Joseph Symuleski, at home, and a daughter Maria Donahue, Waverly, two grandsons; Joseph and Jerry Donahue, his sister Irene Paradise, Greenwood, a former son-in-law, Jerry Donahue, and nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his sister Evelyn Furdin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 AM in St. Paul of the Cross Parish, Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, 1217 Prospect Ave., by Msgr. Joseph Quinn, Pastor. Interment Parish Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday morning at the church from 9 to 10 AM.
