Joseph M.Musewicz

Barbara A. WebbNovember 24, 2020

Joseph M.Musewicz, 67, of Scranton, PA, passed away on Tuesday, November 24, at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore, PA.

Joe, as most knew him, was born on June 8, 1953, to the late Vincent John and Ann (Murray) Musewicz. He was a graduate of South Catholic High School, Class of 1971, and he attended Penn State Worthington Campus where he earned his Associate's Degree.

Joe was a long-time employee at Mercy Hospital (now Regional Hospital) in Scranton, and he enjoyed the 25 years he spent working there. Everyone who knew Joe at "The Old Mercy" knew he loved to stop and chat and was always there to lend a hand or a smile to make someone's day. As a matter of fact, during his last days here on Earth, many of these same friends helped Joe feel extra comfortable as he was cared for at Regional Hospital.

Moreover, Joe lived his faith and enjoyed giving of himself in many other aspects of his life. He volunteered at St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen, was a Eucharistic Minister at Immaculate Conception Parish (Scranton), and helped the less fortunate as often as he could.

For many years he loved having supper and playing card and board games with his group of close-knit friends (you know who you are). He especially enjoyed their birthday dinners and the trips they would take together.

Mostly, Joe loved his large family. Always bringing one of his famous chocolate cakes or his jello surprise, Joe made it to every family event. His family will forever remember the “Uncle Joe-isms” that he was very known for: From "WowWa" to "It's a B-E-A-YOU-tiful day!," Joe made his family laugh and smile whenever he was around. Additionally, they will forever remember his love of nicknames and his love of a good deal, his ability to break out into song, and his ability to give the best hugs possible.

What most will remember about Joe, however, is his giving spirit and his ability to make a new friend with anyone he met. He was always ready and willing to help others, always had respect for his elders, and was an unbelievably wonderful example to all.

Joe is survived by his brothers Thomas and wife Suellen; John and wife Gail; and Michael Musewicz; his sister Mary (Musewicz) Bradford and his close friend whom the siblings consider a sister, Sheila (Cotter) Kohut; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews who lit up his life, and he was a godfather to three of them: his nieces Maria (Musewicz) Van Norman, Emily (Bradford) Yeager, Sarah (Musewicz) Baylor, and great-nephew Leo Vincent Musewicz. Also, he is survived by his cousins Judy Coleman, Mary Lou Emmel, Helen Byrne, and numerous second cousins. Joe was preceded in death by his brother Vincent J. Musewicz, Jr.

A special note of thanks to the staff at Allied Skilled Nursing, Regional Hospital, and the Hospice of the Sacred Heart for making Joe and his family feel comfort during the last couple of months, and especially during his last days.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Joe's family asks that a donation be made in his name to either the St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen, 500 Penn Ave., Scranton, PA 18059 (or via their website), or the Wescoe Foundation for Pulmonary Fibrosis, 229 N. Main Street, Coopersburg, PA 18036.

Howard worked hard and developed many life-long friendships during his 30 year career at the Chamberlain Corps, Scranton PA. He was proud of his dedicated hours and contributions.
Howard loved his time with family and friends, restaurant outings, trips, and mornings out with the guys. He was also a devoted PSU fan for decades, never missing a game. Everyone who knew Howard knew he was the kind of man who could be counted on, someone to be there with the right words to say or wise words of wisdom, to give a hug, or for a shoulder to cry on. He was proud of his family; always supportive, loving, encouraging, and present. His funny, quick witted side lifted our spirits and will not be forgotten including the time he stole the show playing the role of Pope at a Catholic Charismatic roasting. Howard loved life and he held on as long as possible so that he could continue to cherish his remaining time, spend as much time with the people in his life, and importantly, live to see the first PSU game of the 2020 season. Words cannot express how much he will be missed.

Alexis "Lexi" Caviston-Ashmar

July 14, 2020

Alexis "Lexi" Caviston-Ashmar, 23, of Scranton made a fashionable entrance into the gates of Heaven, on July 14, surrounded by family and friends, after a helluva fight with Glioblastoma Multiforme. Those awaiting an invitation to her soiree in paradise include her husband, Joshua, whom she married on June 20, 2020, her parents, Paul & Carol Caviston, a brother and sister-in-law, Ryan & Morgan, her second family, the Ditchkuses, Chris and Sharon Surovy, her inlaws, Makala Ashmar, sister-in-law, her cats, Liberty and Belle, aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends. Her welcoming committee in heaven includes her grandparents, Ken & Jane O'Malley, Paul and Edie Caviston, "Grammy" Edna White, and her father-in-law, Samir Ashmar.

Lexi's passions, after shopping, were found in Joshua, Taylor Swift, burritos, her cats...and the all-too occasional "fuzzy nave". Her sense of humor made the most serious situations hysterically funny and an avenue for a joke at someone else's expense, usually her father's or brother's. She did not let her diagnosis define her; in fact, she defined her diagnosis, naming her tumors Oswald and Abe. Lexi took advantage of any available platform to promote brain tumor awareness, including the NEPA Society of Irish Women and as a guest on The View, where her message reached millions. Through all of this, Lexi still succeeded in graduating cum laude from Mansfield University with her Bachelor's Degree in nursing. She is an alumna of Scranton High School's Class of 2015, where she participated in swimming, soccer, and was president of the Scranton High School Knight Rhythms. Lexi was also employed by The Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania.

Lexi's family would like to express their utmost gratitude to the Nursing, Neuro-surgery, and Neuro-oncology teams at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as to the staff of Allied Services Hospice. Friends, fans, and other well-wishers may visit on Friday, July 17 from 5-8 pm at Nativity Church at St. John Neumann Parish, 633 Orchard Street, Scranton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, July 18th at 9:30am at St. John Neumann Parish. All in attendance are asked to follow state and local guidelines by wearing a facial mask and practicing social distancing. Known to all is Lexi's sense of fashion. Therefore, we ask you to refrain from wearing black; instead, attire should be as colorful as her personality. For those unable to attend, mass will be streamed live on the parish Facebook page - St. John Neumann Parish. Internment at Cathedral Cemetery. Friends are encouraged to leave a memory of Lexi at www.augusthaasfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Lexi Caviston Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o First Credit Union of Scranton, 605 Davis Street, Scranton, 18505.

Carmella Marcino Rinaldoni

May 3, 2020

Formerly of Scranton and Moscow, PA and a resident of the Jewish Home of Eastern, PA passed away on May 3, 2020 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She is survived by her daughters Lynn Mendicino and Renee Puchalski.

Carmella and her late husband, Leo Rinaldoni, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on April 23, 2020. Leo preceded Carmella in death by less than two weeks, passing on April 21, 2020.

Carmella was born in Pittston, PA and was the daughter of the late Giuseppe and Biagina Marcino, who immigrated to the United States from Italy.

Carmella was a graduate of Pittston Area schools and was employed by the Scranton School District as a lunch lady for many years at Garfield #11 School in South Scranton. She also worked in daycare for several years for the Scranton Lackawanna Human Development Agency and at a privately owned gym. These jobs were fitting for her since she had so much love to give, which made her like a second mother to all of the children she worked with over the years.

Carmella never spoke a bad word, unless she was watching a Yankees game (during a Yankees game she would tell her grandchildren curse words were merely considered "slang"). She loved to cook for her loved ones, but never did it without making a mess all over the kitchen and herself (causing her loved ones to laugh and tease her, which she took in stride). Carmella was also a great bowler, known to bowl a perfect game. She was a talented artist, drawing her grandchildren's favorite cartoon characters for them upon request. Carmella loved to sing and share songs with anyone who cared to listen, which many did due to her beautiful singing voice.

To know Carmella was to love her. Her kindness was immeasurable and her character was unmatched. She was the type of person you would measure yourself against. To be as kind as her, as loving as her, and giving as her was the yard stick to measure any good person against. Her capacity for love allowed anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her to feel that love, because she gave a piece of her heart to anyone she met. Carmella always had a smile on her face, an infectious laugh, and she loved her family and friends unconditionally. However, her true calling in life was being a mother and especially a grandmother. Her daughters and grandchildren were the loves of her life.

Carmella is survived by her daughter Lynn Mendicino, wife of the late Gasper
Mendicino of Moscow, and daughter Renee Puchalski and her husband Vincent of Taylor.

She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Sara Mendicino Friedman and husband Dave, Albany, NY, Christina Mendicino Lehr and husband John, Cresco, PA, Antonio Mendicino, Ashley Puchalski, Pittsburgh, PA, Mallory Puchalski and Kyle Puchalski. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Carmella was preceded in death by her husband Leo Rinaldoni, her son-in-law Gasper Mendicino, sister Mary Soska and brother-in-law Frank Soska, Brother Liborio Marcino and sister-in-law Jane Marcino and her brother Angelo Marcino.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff who cared for Carmella the last few years at the Jewish Home of Scranton. The family immeasurably appreciates their compassionate actions over the years and especially during her last days when her family could not be with her during these difficult times.

Due to the current health crisis, the family will have a mass and memorial at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, which helped Carmella and her family during her struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. They can use the support during these unprecedented times. Please send donations in Carmella's name to: 600 Baltimore Drive, Suite 7, Wilkes-Barre, PA, 18702.

Leo Rinaldoni

April 21, 2020

Leo Rinaldoni, Formerly of Scranton and Moscow and a resident of the Jewish Home of Eastern PA, Scranton, PA, died at Geisinger Community Medical Center from COVID-19. He is survived by his wife Carmella Marcino Rinaldoni to whom he would have been married for 60 years on April 23, 2020.

Leo was born in Scranton, the son of the late Angelo and Sarah Perugini Rinaldoni, who came to Scranton from Italy.

Leo was a graduate of SCranton Technical High School and served in the United States Army. He was a Korean War Veteran. During the war he was a cook and had many stories of his time abroad serving our country.

He was employed by the United States Post Office as a letter carrier for over 40 years. His time on the job made him the best person to ask for directions and instilled a joy of driving everywhere that lasted for years to come.

Leo could never sit still - he aways wanted to help and keep busy. After retiring from the post office, he regularly helped at his daughter and son-in-law's restaurant, Mendicino's Pizza, in Moscow, PA, by assisting with prep cooking and catering. He also drove for August J. Haas Funeral Home, Scranton, PA. Leo was an avid hunter. More than the hunting though, he loved to spend that time in the woods, mainly in Bradford County with his hunting buddies and his beloved hunting dogs.

For years Leo's daily routine included a visit with his friends at the Dante Literary Society in South Scranton. He also loved taking a walk among the "collectibles" of the Salvation Army, sometimes bringing home a few of them to his family's dismay.

More than anything, Leo will be remembered as a big personality. He was a person who cold make you laugh until your sides hurt without even trying. He always had sage advice (even when you didn't ask for it, but he knew you needed it) and never minced words. You would always know when he was nearby due to his constant whistling of a tune. He also loved a nap, regardless of the time or place. His presence was the essence of contentment and peacefulness.

Leo is survived by his wife Carmella, his daughter Lynn Mendicino, wife of the late Gasper Mendicino of Moscow, and daughter Renee Puchalski and her husband Vincent Puchalski of Taylor. Leo is also survived by his six grandchildren, Sara Mendicino Friedman and Husband David, Albany, NY, Christina Mendicino Lehr and husband John, Cresco, PA, Antonio Mendicino, Moscow, PA, Ashley Puchalski, Pittsburgh, PA, Mallory Puchalski and Kyle Puchalski, Taylor, PA.

Leo was preceded in death by his father and mother, Angelo and Sarah, his sister Norma Trama and brother-in-law Joseph Trama, his brother Joseph Rinaldoni, and sister-in-law Wanda Rinaldoni, and his son-in-law Gasper Mendicino.

The family would sincerely like to thank the staff who cared for Leo the last few years at the Jewish Home of Scranton. They would also like to thank the staff at Geisinger Community Medical Center who cared for Leo in his final days and who were with him in his final moments to provide him company and comfort when his family could not. Your heroic and compassionate actions during these difficult times are immeasureably appreciated.

Due to the current health crisis, the family will have a mass amd memorial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the North Pocono Food Pantry, Moscow, PA to help others in need during these unprecedented times. Send donations in Leo's Name to P.O. Box 250, Moscow, PA 18444.

Assunta Tomassi Lispi

February 10, 2020

Assunta Tomassi Lispi was born September 21, 1925 in the province of Frosinone, Italy. She immigrated to the US in December of 1930. A lively, intelligent girl, she assimilated quickly and won the spelling bee in the second grade. She graduated from Scranton Central High, and enjoyed writing and the arts. She worked as a record tester at Capitol records, and met many famous singers on the Capitol Records label, which only enhanced her love of music.

Monday evening she died peacefully in the arms of her husband, Aleandro Lispi. They had been married for 69 years. They met when she was working at a St. Francis of Assisi block party. He told her then and there that he was going to marry her. She eventually gave in, after the initial shock. They formed a family, living for many years in a duplex above her parents, Vincenzo and Antonia Tomassi. They had seven children, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all of whom were the pride and joy of her long and happy life. The bereft children are Eugene Lispi and his wife Linda, and their three children, Barbara Moses, Ketura Tone and Gino Lispi, Jr. Followed quickly by the twins, Lisa Bartoletti and Lenora DelVecchio, and husbands Paul Bartoletti, and the recently deceased John DelVecchio, with grandchildren Mia Haney, David Bartoletti and Milena DelVecchio. Daniel Lispi and daughter Nina Lispi, his companion Lovey and her daughter Frances, Lina Santomauro and husband Jim, Vincent Lispi and wife Elizabeth, and daughter Emelia Lispi, and finally Alan Lispi. Alice and Everett Moses, Talia and Leo Tone and Matthew Haney are her five beloved great grandchildren.

Sue, as she was known to her friends, was not content to be mother of seven, but added the much loved children of her deceased brother Ralph, niece Margaret Kang and husband Clyde with son Christian, and nephew Ralph and wife Betty Jo into her loving heart. She adopted many a parentally challenged friend and they were always welcomed to the table. There was boundless love, boundless joy and energy throughout her stay here on earth. Her laugh pealed like bells, and she had a wonderful sense of humor. Their second forever home, which had belonged to her wonderful in-laws, Eugenio and Emilia Lispi, was always overflowing with cherished friends, who made life even more fun. I must also mention that she adored her nieces and nephews from her husband's side, and kept them and their children especially close. There is an Italian saying, 'a tavola non s' invecchia mai' which roughly translates to, invite friends and family to your table and you will never grow old. Sue lived by this, and was forever young at heart. She will be sorely missed.

In lieu of flowers, friends can donate to The St. Joseph's Center, 2010 Adams Ave. Scranton, PA 18509. Viewing will be Thursday February 13 from 4 to 7 pm at August Haas Funeral Home, 202 Pittston Avenue Scranton, PA and Mass of Christian Burial on Friday Feb 14, 10 am, at St Gregory's Church, 33 N. Abington Rd., Clarks Green, PA. Please go directly to the church. Interment, Italian-American Cemetery.

Adele Laboranti

February 3, 2020

Adele Laboranti, 92, a Scranton resident, on Monday evening left her full and interesting life to join her husband and beloved sons in her next life.

Adele was born in Scranton, October 4, 1927, to the late Stanley and Martha Mellon Walker. She was the widow of Frank Laboranti, Sr. who died in 2014. She had a fascinating life where her brilliance could be shown to the world. She loved bragging about her intelligence, arguing about anything she could, and, of course, winning the argument. Her professional career started as a teacher, followed by attaining the rank of Lieutenant, US Navy. She was stationed at the Pentagon in administrative duties. Up until the time of her passing, she would not reveal any confidential information that she obtained in Naval Intelligence. Because of her love of reading books, especially fictional murder mysteries, she became a librarian in New York City where she had a slew of people to argue with. Next, she met her late husband, who provided her with a good life. God then called her to nurse her late son, Mark, who suffered with Cystic Fibrosis. She nursed him until his far too early demise. A second son, Frank, Jr. also passed away from the same disease in 2016.

Adele's entire family is grateful to have had her as a mother and are optimistic about her soul meeting up with the loves of her life, her husband, her two sons, and her parents. Through all her heartbreak, Adele remained faithful that Our Lord, Jesus, is taking care of her family.

Surviving are her son Paul Laboranti and longtime companion, Linda Marta, and a daughter Anne Laboranti, a sister, Louise Brown, a daughter-in-law Patricia Laboranti, nieces, nephews and a wide variety of friends she met during her fascinating life. Adele's family would like to thank her nurses and nurses aids in the Green Ridge Nursing Home, the doctors and nurses at the Geisinger CMC Intensive Care Unit, especially Adam, who she was blessed with to take care of her when she was so sick. We would also like to thank Allied Services Hospice. Adele fought a good fight with Alzheimer's but she allowed God to do as He thought what was best for her at the end. She could not argue this fate as God usually wins. God will hear of her anger about her children's illness. He will listen and unite her with her loved ones. She was also preceded in death by a sister Janet McNulty.
