Jerome (Jerry) D. Lucke
May 31, 2022
Jerome (Jerry) D. Lucke, 79, of the East Mountain area of Scranton, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He and his wife, the former Andrea R. Kettel were married for 54 years. Jerry was a life-long devout member of Holy Name of Jesus Church.
Son of the late Carl and Elizabeth Bauman Lucke, he grew up on "the Mountain," learning the importance of appreciating all the simple pleasures of God's creation. He instilled this appreciation and enjoyment of the fruits of the Earth in his daughters and grandchildren, whether it involved savoring a fresh-picked apple or tomato from the garden, skipping rocks on Mountain Lake, or whistling along with the melodic songs of the birds. Jerry would be considered a quiet observer, a man of few words, but his words were wise.
Upon graduating from St. Mary's High School, Jerry served in the Navy. He then worked for PPL as a lineman leader for 37 years. Jerry was a lifelong member of the South Scranton Bachelors Club and avid Penn State football fan. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and golfing, most especially with his family.
Jerry's love and pride for his 3 girls were beyond measure, and when they each married, he gained the best sons he could ever ask for. From their unions, he was blessed with 8 grandchildren whom he adored. His ultimate joy came from watching and sharing in his family's joy.
Jerry's family wishes to thank Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their wonderful care and compassion and Dr. Michele Hazzouri for the care she provided for many years.
In addition to his wife, Andrea, Jerry is survived by his children, Tricia Fehnel and her husband, Bradford, of Mendham, NJ; Jennifer Dragonetti and her husband, Matthew, of Bermuda; Elizabeth Rinaldi and her husband, Jerome, of Bethlehem; his 8 grandchildren, William, Luke, and Jacob Fehnel, Caroline, John, and Hope Dragonetti, and Grace and Celia Rinaldi; a sister, Sylvia Gustin of Scranton; his brothers-in-law, Andrew Kettel and his wife, Judy, of Clarks Summit and Thomas Kettel of Scranton; his sisters-in-law, Lisa Sutter and her husband, Daniel, of Clarks Summit and Jaqueline Lucke of Peckville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was also preceded in death by his brother, James Lucke of Scranton.
The funeral will be Saturday at 9:30 AM from the August J. Haas Funeral Home, Inc., 202 Pittston Ave., with a Mass Of Christian Burial at 10 AM in Holy Name of Jesus Church, St. John Neumann Parish, 1414 E. Elm St. to be celebrated by Rev. Elizabeth "Betty" Brier Phillips
April 14, 2022
Remember me with smiles, not tears. I was blessed with a full life of 95 years. My life on earth has ended, and I am resting in the arms of Jesus, surrounded by loved ones who have gone before me.
My journey began when I was born on January 16, 1927, to John and Magdalena Landolt Kettel Brier in Scranton, PA. Our blended Brier/Kettel family included one brother, Andrew "Butchie" Kettel, and five sisters: Alma, Rose, and Romaine (Sister Jannette, S.C.C.) Brier, Marie Kettel Olenchak, and Magdalena Brier Sviatko, who all preceded me in death. I was also predeceased by my husband, Leroy, with whom I was blessed to share 65 beautiful years of marriage. I missed him dearly, but we were reunited when I took my last breath on Holy Thursday morning, April 14th.
Surviving are my children, Mari (David) King, Lee (Susan) Phillips, and Nancy (Gary) Cicerini; my grandchildren, Reagan (Matthew) Hill, Evan (Gillian) Phillips, and Elizabeth (Jason) Wilkens; and my three precious great-grandsons, Cael Brier Hill, Levi Shawn Phillips, and Finley James Wilkens. My brother-in-law, Donald Sviatko; sister-in-law, Evelyn Phillips Rodgers; and dearly loved nieces and nephews also survive me.
I cherished life with our family, many friends, and church family at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Scranton's South Side, where I volunteered my time in numerous parish-related functions until its closing. I was a graduate of St. Mary's Grade School and High School (Class of 1944) where I was active in musical productions and a cheerleader for the Moyas basketball team. A faithful mom, I raised my children and then began my career working at Acme Fast Freight. After retiring from Emery Air Freight, I continued living life to the fullest with my husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandsons, extended Brier/Kettel family and friends.
I treasured the countless family vacations, reunions, backyard picnics, and Sunday dinners. I enjoyed playing cards with the "club girls", Saturday dinners with the "gang", and dancing with Lee to the sounds of the Big Bands.
I want to thank my in-home care givers, St. Mary's Villa Residence staff, and GCMC hospitalists and EMU nurses for your extraordinary care and compassion (you know who you are). A special thank you to Father Scott Sterowski for his friendship, support, and prayers since we met when Lee and I became parishioners at St. Paul of the Cross Parish.
Please join my family at August J. Haas Funeral Home, 202 Pittston Ave., Scranton, on Tuesday, April 26th, between 4 and 7 p.m. to celebrate my life. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, April 27th, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul of the Cross Parish (Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church), 1217 Prospect Avenue, Scranton. Interment will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery.

Yolanda R. Rotondaro
January 7, 2022
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Yolanda Rotondaro of south Scranton. She died on January 7, 2022 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore. A beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, we can't imagine our lives without her. Had she lived another 12 days, she would have reached the amazing milestone of turning 92 years old.
A native of Italy, she came to this country with her parents and sister at the age of only 6 months, and went through Ellis Island. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Olympia Bucciarelli. She was raised and educated in Scranton and graduated from Technical High School in 1947. After graduation, she worked in the insurance industry for 7 years. During that time she met and married the love of her life, her soulmate James. Together they enjoyed 56 years of a wonderful marriage, until his passing in 2012.
After she married and had her children, she chose to be a stay at home mom because taking care of her family was the greatest joy of her life. A meticulous homemaker, people would say "you could eat off of her floor". The only thing that topped the care she took of her home were her skills as an Italian cook. We all looked so forward to anything she prepared and devoured it quickly.
She never failed to amaze us with her energy level. People were shocked to learn that she was exercising on her treadmill nearly every day. That lasted until she was almost 90. She was an avid reader and very proud of the fact that, at the age of 82, she was able to learn how to use her new iPad. She endured many hardships during her long life as part of the "greatest generation", but ultimately overcame it all to live a very happy life. Her greatest joy was spending time with family and friends.
Her Catholic faith was the centerpiece of her entire life and she successfully passed on a strong faith to her children and grandchildren. She never failed to begin and end each day with prayer, thanksgiving and devotion to God. She was a lifelong member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, until its closing, and then a member of St. Paul of the Cross Church in Scranton.
Surviving are her daughters, Nancy Donovan of Clarks Summit, Joan Rotondaro, Janet Williams and husband Mike, grandchildren Samantha, Sarah and Jason Williams, and great granddaughter Saige Williams, all of Scranton. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Toni Shinal and Mary Tabone, a brother-in-law Leonard Tabone, nieces and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Cali, son-in-law Robert Donovan, two brothers-in-law, Joseph Cali and John Shinal and a nephew Joseph Cali.
She adored and treasured her entire family and was so grateful to be blessed with the many years we all spent together. She was truly the anchor of our family and will be forever missed by all who knew and loved her. The family would like to thank Dr. Linda Frantz, Regional Hospital and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the outstanding care she received throughout the years. Private funeral arrangements were made by August Haas Funeral Home and held at the convenience of the family.
